New Sheriff to Be Named Next Week

County Judge Felix McGaughy says a successor to Brewster County Sheriff Carl Williams will be named by the Commissioners Court early next week. Williams resigned effective December 31 1969 and will join the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education as a consultant.

Feasibility study on metallic high school buildings discussed

School Superintendent Clarence Winn will present a feasibility study on using metallic buildings for the new high school facilities at the January 1970 school board meeting. The plan aims to cut costs with 19 or 20 classrooms, while officials consider lab layouts, a potential theatre, and air conditioning.

Zip Code Use Urged by Postmaster for Christmas Mail

Postmaster Billy West urges all Christmas mail include ZIP codes and a return address to avoid dead letter losses. He notes last year over 2 billion pieces had unreadable or missing addresses, costing about $7.9 million. Alpine Post Office will keep normal December hours with Saturday closures.

Bus Stop to be staged in two evenings this December

Alpine Boys B Team Basketball Tourney Opens Tonight

The first annual Alpine Boys B Team Basketball Tournament begins with eight teams including Alpine Fort Stockton Fort Davis Pecos Crane Van Horn Presidio and Alpine Freshmen. Alpine 9th opens against Fort Stockton B at 6 p.m. and Alpine B faces Fort Davis at 7 30 p.m. semifinals and finals run Friday through Saturday with 25 cent student and 50 cent adult session fees.

Mobil to Drill Jeff Davis Test in Texas

Mobil Oil Corp plans a 12 300 foot tren burcer wildcat in Jeff Davis County, 23 miles northeast of Fort Davis. The No 1 Margaret Lea test sits 11 miles southwest of the Perry Bass field in Pecos County with coordinates 1 320 feet from the south and 2 310 feet from the west line of 9 11 GH and SA.

Alpine Hosts Vocational Education Workshop December 11

The Alpine Public Schools will host a vocational education workshop on Thursday December 11 from 930 a.m. to 330 p.m. Dr Weldon Elbert TEA administrator coordinated the program with guest consultants from the Texas Education Agency. The TEA plan revision data will aid rewriting the Guide for Public Schools in Planning Programs of Vocational Education for In school students at the Alpine School Administration office.

Alpine Chamber of Commerce to elect four directors

Balloting is underway for four board seats on the Alpine Chamber of Commerce. Members receive mail ballots this week with candidates including Fred Dick Gene Hillyer Mrs Edith Hopson John Red Pattillo J W Shepperd Duane Smith Kenneth Stucke and Frank Yakubanski Retiring directors are Thad Corkins Forrest Walker and Hugh White Ballots must be returned to the Chamber office by December 20 for terms starting at the January banquet.
