The Alpine press shares letters from Ned McKinney of Marta contesting a deer weight claim and from A R Stambaugh now at Lockheed, plus Pvt Douglass training. readers mock the earlier “old ruins” quip as the column ends with a lone note.
The Avalanche will publish a day early for Christmas week, dated Friday Dec 28. The paper will be printed and mailed Thursday afternoon instead of Friday morning as usual.
The Mask and Slipper drama group of Sul Ross college presented Clifford Goldsmiths three act comedy What A Life in a history making post theater production. War touched the show as cadets officers and enlisted men filled the seatless house. C F Jones of Eldorado Texas played Henry Aldrich and prepared to leave for Fort Bliss as an inductee while Biloice took Belloyces role after being called to the Air corps. Annie Kate Ferguson and Lucy Hudson adapted and filled roles on short notice. The troupe traveled by Api epeeress hall to Alpine and returned in a truck.
Alpine Lions Club sponsors a drive urging local families to host service members for Christmas meals or Sunday visits. Cards and a form are available at the Community Service Organization building on North Sixth Street or left at the CSO for filing. Churches are asked to help by listing interested service men.
First Lieutenant Eugene Ellis, a Sul Ross alumnus, was awarded the Air Medal in London on December 1 for conspicuous bravery during a combat mission over Axis territory. He reportedly shot down two Focke Wulf 190s, aided a crippled bomber, and earned the decoration from Major General Ira C. Baker at a Flying Fortress station in Britain.
The Alpine PTA held its December meeting on the second Monday. A first grade Christmas playlet with Brownie costumes, Rhythm band, Santa, and songs honored the season. Father Francis Juaniz spoke on Courage for Crisis, linking character growth to home, school, and church.
Mr James W Glasscock former Pan American Airways air field manager in Africa and his wife Mrs Glasscock with their baby son arrive to visit Mrs Glasscock and Mrs Austin’s parents Mr and Mrs J C Epperson Judge Epperson, attorney, moved to Alpine from McAllen recently.
Edgar Bergen with Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd visited the Post theatre flying school last Thursday afternoon. Pat Patrick hosted while Dale Evans Julie Gibson and Bert Kalmer assisted. The party flew in by plane and left to perform at the Pecos flying school afterward.
Alpine Wool and Mohair Co reports the sale of the last car of mohair of the season to Milton Cohen for Collins and Rowbotham Inc of Boston. Included was J. W. Friend’s clip, bringing top prices of 42 and 44 cents. The local firm handled five cars of mohair this season.
Christmas Day will be observed as a holiday at the Marfa Flying school. All personnel except those on guard, kitchen police, and certain other duties will be off. New Year’s Day will not be a holiday. A medium bomber carries 804 pounds of rubber in it.
John L Sublett an Alpine resident and Army flying school instructor flew home in a training plane with Pvt Alwyn Chitwood. They stopped at San Angelo and Traan to visit his wife’s parents, then continued to Alpine before returning to Enid. He is the first Alpine boy in the air forces to visit home by flying his own plane.
Several new officers reported for duty this week at the Advanced Flying school including Maj. Millard E Gump of the Medical Corps Flight Surgeon and staff to Maj. Leo F Bach Others include Capt Bernardt L Mortensen 2nd Lt Helen F Codling 2nd Lt Earl F Hamrick 2nd Lt Philipp J Caroselli and Warrant Officer Charl Anderson Gump formerly eye specialist in Oakland California was commissioned Oct 17 and stationed in Los Angeles before lake pier Arizona Then at Santa Ana before joining the local school Hamrick heads Adjutant General's department at Marfa and Codling from San Diego is assistant to Finance Officer Tipton Mortensen from Los Angeles has served since 1941 and comes to Marfa with daughter Diane Anderson is first Warrant Officer at Marfa plus a note about binoculars and vacuum cleaners containing zinc.
Miss Cornelia Bennett returned from Houston where she attended the christening of the Liberty cargo ship Big Foot. The ceremony was led by Mrs. J. L. Barkley and joined by Grover Stephens and several locals from Lowake and surrounding towns. The Lowake school led a state scrap drive, with Sierra Blanca and Marathon placing second and third. The Lions Club elected officers for the year led by Dr. W. E. Lockhart as president and R. A. Whiteside as first vice president. Fred S. Rogers serves as secretary with James Kemp as Lion Tamer and L. D. Stockton as Tail Twister. Directors include Wilton Williams and A. J. Bierschwale. Anticipated Lions initiative includes starting checks on men aged 18 to 65 in Brewster County.
Plans for the coming year were discussed at a Baptist Sunday school business meeting with about 30 attendees. One department reported four Standard classes, noted as an unusual record. A Christmas party for the Bap List Student Union drew 33 students with games and films of Argentina and Mexico, followed by refreshments.
A special Christmas music program will be presented at the Methodist church Sunday evening at 7 30 under Mrs Bill Winter. The public is invited. Items include Come all ye Faithful. The Christmas Story. Silent Night Holy Night. The Wondrous Story. The Nativity Song. Cantique Noel. Holy Night. I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. Send Back the Song. Peace on Earth Good Will to Men. Performers include Mrs Nichols Mrs Vogt Mrs McGrew Mrs Anderson Myra Sue Barger Ruth Slight Kitty Schbach and others.
1st Lt Albert C Monkman of the U S Army Chaplain Corps has arrived at the Advanced Flying School to assume post chaplain duties. He comes from Santa Ana Army Air Base where he pursued an orientation course and left before completion. Monkman is a Bayard Nebraska former church pastor, born in Orangeville Ontario, 40, Nebraska Wesleyan University graduate 1925, with further studies at Northwestern University and Garnett College.
Beginning at an early date all peace officers will challenge men ages 18 to 68 to locate settlers who have not registered. Registrants should carry registration and classification cards at all times. Those who have volunteered for service must still register if 18. All unregistered volunteers in the Reserve will be added to the rolls with credit to their residence bounty and status preserved.
At Marfa Flying School Col. Gerald Hoyle announced 41 promotions within the Medical corps. Promotions include sergeants Carl D. Bray, Darrell V. Hoyt, Dominic J. Novak, Frank C. Schiff and Earl Walters. technicians 4th grade Oscar R. Musser and Leo J. Otto. corporals Edward A. Brumirski Frank W. Clements Clyde D. Cooper Charles E. Jackson Marvin E. Pierce Gus A. Solderling Jr. privates first class John Anderson Ernst B. Baden Walter W. Carlson Patrick J. Carragher Jr Guadalupe L. Gomez Edward W. Herman Willard E. Johnson John A. Lishamer William H. Michaelson Francis J. Muller John J. Murphy Robert G. Rydhen Arthur Simon Lloyd F. Sylva Richard Warrener Lawrence C. Wenau Lester J. White Pigeon Connie O. Woolbright Joel H. Zimmerman John A. Zok. All promotions are in Medical corps under Lt. Gene E. Taylor.
Rev R L Wittner announces three educational films to be shown after Sunday evening services at the Baptist church. Two cover foreign mission work in China and a government released China subject film presented by Dr G P Smith district war film coordinator. An 1800 foot sound film. No admission charge and the public is invited to attend.
