The building committee plans to bid soon on a modern structure to replace the present church on the prime Alpine lot. Architect notes rush plans, with construction likely starting early January. The design includes a spacious auditorium, Sunday School rooms, a full basement for social work, ladies parlor, pastor's study, and up-to-date facilities.
The Sul Ross Normal School Board of Regents announced Miss Jane McGrath as teacher of Primary Methods, Mr F G Walker as head professor of physics and chemistry, and Miss Kathleen Molesworth as auditor and teacher of business subjects. All will begin during the summer quarter around June 15 1920.
G R Richardson of the United States Geological Survey and colleagues Virgil Grey James Hardy and Robert Phelps visited Marathon area. They are making a topographical map of southwest Texas for geological and military use while noting potential oil prospects, though not seeking oil at this time.
Will Lemons county clerk of Annie died at Santa Rosa Hospital on December 9 1919 at age 40. His body was brought to Marathon Thursday and mourners gather including his wife mother and seven children with many relatives present. Also mentioned are Will Crawford breaking a leg, L B Burnette moving to Homer La to become Roadmaster and P Ry, and various family updates as Miss Ruth Stillwell and Miss Louat return for vacation with relatives in San Antonio Fort Worth and San Antonio listed as places involved.
Alpine Light and Ice Company plans to spend 25000 on new equipment and extending its light and ice plant. They have ordered poles and will install a 280 horsepower engine after January 1920, aiming to start projects by February and complete within a month or more.
The Junior Missionary Society met Sunday afternoon at 3 at the Methodist Church. Officers for the coming year were elected: Helen Reed president Audrey McSpadden first vice president Charles Cooke second vice president Ruth Anderson treasurer Lena Derrick corresponding secretary Dorothy secretary Supt of Home and Cotter Supt of something to go to the Methodist Church. Mes W. Walker from Arizona arrived via his aunt Mrs J C Bird. He owns an alfalfa farm in Arizona and is pleased with his home.
Mrs HB Houston of Uvalde Texas advertises hemstitching and pi voting services at 10 cents per yard and a price of two dollars for a garment alteration or related work.
