Capt Walter 8 Caldwell 38 of Kilgore formerly Alpine resident was killed in action in Italy Nov 20 the War department advised relatives. Caldwell a Texas university Medical school Galveston graduate practiced medicine in Kilgore from 1932 until he joined the army. Overseas since April 26 he was medical officer with an anti aircraft unit of the 36th Texas division which landed at Salerno. Survived by wife two daughters Carolyn Ann 7 and Linda Sue 4 his parents Mr and Mrs W E Caldwell Kilgore and a sister Mrs John Montgomery Nina Belle of Knoxville Tenn Mrs Arthur G Caldwell Blucher of Kilgore is a cousin.

Officers Promoted at Pilot School Recognize Outstanding Service

Pvt Norman Found Not Guilty In Cutting Fray
Pvt Norman, held at the air base guard house since early October, was found not guilty in a trial held at the air base Monday. Sgt William J Kelley of the 818% squadron was seriously injured in the October 1 fray. Norman, on furlough from Fort Leonard Wood, was charged with the offense.

Wayne E. Meliride writes from Fort Benning Ga about a one month parachute training cycle for volunteers. Trainees must be physically perfect and pass a mental test. Training covers running calisthenics rope climbing and Judo in week one. Week two builds jump awareness with 35 foot tower drops and harness checks. Week three is a super carnival with 250 foot tower jumps and automatic chute releases. Trainees learn landing technique pack their own chutes and rehearse the full drill from door to drop.

Alpine Parents Receive Word From Son Who Is A Prisoner of the Japs
Hilario Cordova Jr. of Alpine, 24, a Pvt. with the 200th Coast Artillery Antiaircraft, sent two cards from a Philippine camp reporting he is a prisoner of the Japanese after the fall of Bataan. The messages praise health and request prayers as he awaits release. A separate note mentions a new Navy induction for his father-in-law in Houston.
