Lt Don Taylor of Alpine was in a dramatic armistice day air duel over the South Pacific near Rabaul. A Liberator and Jap Zero exchanged fire. Taylor was wounded and his plane damaged but survived after landing on water and being rescued by a Grumman amphibian. He later reached base hospital with four engines out, praised for devotion and gallantry.
Rains totaling .44 inch in the Big Bend Davis mountains over the past week improved pasture conditions and boosted the month’s total to 44 inches with a late Saturday shower and a Wednesday early morning shower. Weather remains springlike with weed and pea vine growth up across lower Highlands.
A patrol school sergeant, S/Sgt. John R. Hayes, died in the Presidio highway crash about 15 miles south of Marfa. Four others were hurt: Miss Margaret Fortner of Marfa, T/Sgt. William Stewart, T/Sgt. Riddle, both Fort D. A. Russell, and Mrs Dorothy Hayes, whose injuries were not yet detailed.
Teofilo Jimenez a Fort Davis resident for 40 years died at his home aged about 101 born in Mexico in March 1643. Survivors include wife and five children Maria Luis Eloy Jose Jimenez and Enrique Jimenez all of Fort Davis. Funeral Tuesday at St Josephs Catholic church with Rev Amalio Fernandez officiating burial at Fort Davis Catholic cemetery. He recalled Alamo Texas frontier days and Indian conflicts. An Alpine physician stationed in the Pacific predicts World War II will end about one year after Germany falls. He cites Allied advances and strategic naval and air victory, noting a slow ground campaign and difficult amphibious operations. He praises American troops and the nation’s educational drive as crucial to victory and cites personal medical experiences in current theatres.
J C Henderson, held in Jeff Davis county jail since November 14 over the slaying of 74 year old William Clay Farris and the fatal wounding of Mrs Pearl Farris Henderson, was released last week on bonds of 10000 in each case. Bonds set by Judge William Granger. Henderson to report for the January term. attorney Tom Lea of El Paso represents him.
An emergency guest house has been opened in the civilian housing area of the pilot school. Two three room units provide sleeping for eight, with three more units due soon. Lt. Davis B. Class says the facility is for emergency use only and for those unable to obtain other accommodations.
The air field at Marfa joins national observances for The Army Air Forces Salute the WACs. WAC detachment from Sul Ross college will tour the base Sunday 1 to 5 30 p m with guided field visits and a social dance. Colonel Donald B Phillips invites Big Bend residents to attend.
The Army’s WAC branch plans to close WAC Branch No 7 at Sul Rose college after the current class graduates. Class No 7, the largest since July, began arriving Monday, with most overhead personnel expected to remain until graduation. Training will continue at basic centers to cut operating costs by several million dollars. No details on deactivate of the unit or officer staffing are available yet. information will be released when received.
At the December meeting the focal FFA chapter elected two honorary members for 1944. Ernest Gibbons and Otis Kimball were chosen for aiding the chapter’s progress. They will be initiated at the next meeting. A Christmas party planning was discussed for next Tuesday at eight. A three-boy committee was formed to arrange details. The program featured an educational talk by W E Williams, Area II supervisor, followed by hot tamales served as refreshments.
The Alpine Parent Teacher Association will meet Thursday December instead of the next Monday due to holidays. The program includes a Christmas program by primary grades and a talk by Rev R L Wittner at 3 20 in the high school auditorium. All members and friends are invited.
