Pure Oil Plans 1200-Gallon Water Well Near Hovey

Pure Oil to drill a 1200 gallon per minute irrigation well on Graet Brothers land near Hovey in northeast Brewster County, with Clarence Hord of Alpine guiding Gract land. The 450 foot well tested 1228 gpm in a 6 hour pumping test, and a new 10 inch pump will push about 1100 gpm when irrigating. Hord plans to plow after year’s start and plant 1800 acres in cotton, alfalfa, and hacienda next April on land adjoining the McGill Ranch.

Corpus Christi Hosts Lobos in Memorial Stadium Showdown

Corpus Christi Tarpons meet Sul Ross Lobos this weekend in Memorial Stadium as Sul Ross seeks to extend its 7–0 record. The Lobos boast wins over Whi Sands Proving Ground Abilene Christian Trinity Eastern New Mexico and McMurry. Tarpons leaders Tyrus Hawkins and G W Maxfield headline the offense while Sul Ross reports strong shooting marks across five players. The series opened last season with Sul Ross sweeping 88–43 and 66–43 in Alpine.

Alpine High teams run past Marfa in four game series

Alpine High boys and girls defeated Marfa in a four game basketball series last Tuesday night. Alpine B Girls won 41-30, A Girls 52-8, Alpine B Boys 35-14, and Alpine A Boys 67-44. Don Burgess and Terry Beckett led Alpine A with 14 points each. Melendez and Jiminez led Marfa with 14 and 12 respectively. Juan Arista missed due to a sprained ankle. Irene Rodriguez led Alpine B girls with 20 points. Mary Jalindo scored 20 for Alpine A girls.

Sul Ross Band and Church Choir Set Yale Program on Sunday

Sul Ross State College Band directed by Joe Bellamah joins the First Baptist Church Choir and Pastor Ralph T. Wootton for a special Christmas Music and Scripture Program at Alpine First Baptist Church Sunday afternoon. The event features carols, hymns, and readings led by Mrs. Edwin McCollum and Majorie Hill, with a postlude by Mrs. Pirtle.

Alpine Trekkers Find River Road Exciting Adventure

At least seven carloads of Alpine residents rode the Treasure Trail from Lajitas to Presidio County on Sunday. The narrow unpaved road climbs Colorado Canyon with Big Mountain a dizzying sight. The seven-car caravan included multiple families and guests. The trip ended on pavement at Redford after rising about 700 feet above the Rio Grande, though the rise seemed far higher.

Dr Grey resigns geology chair at Sul Ross College

Dr. Charles E. Grey, longtime geology professor and head of the department at Sul Ross State College, has submitted his resignation to the Board of Regents effective January 28, 1956. He will pursue private geology consultation with firms in Graham Texas area and has become partner and vice-president of Eckert Mineral Research Corp. in Florence Colorado. He earned degrees from Kansas and Wisconsin and has worked as a petroleum and mining consultant from Durango Mexico to the Alaska border since 1947.

Alpine High Christmas Band Concert Tuesday Night

Alpine patrons will hear Central and Centennial Beginner bands, Junior High, and Alpine High School bands perform a Christmas program in the High School Auditorium Tuesday December 20. Admission is free with a post concert party for band students, parents, and faculty.

Terlingua School Tax Hike Election Ordered

Voters in Terlingua Common School District No 4 will cast ballots on December 31 to decide whether the tax rate should rise from 10e on the 100 valuation to a maximum of 50. A petition led Brewster County Commissioners Court to order the election at the regular meeting.

Standard Leases Acreage Between Alpine and Hovey

Pure Oil Co. announced plans for a oil week wildcat in Brewster County while Standard Oil Co. of Texas filed oil gas and mineral leases on over 10 000 acres in northeastern Brewster County. The Pure Oil test No 1 Massie West sits 5 1/2 miles southeast of Paisano and 560 feet from the north and east lines of 548-8 GH&SA. Pure Oil holds about 100 000 acres in the area as several major oil firms lease Brewster land. Doctors Agree On Equipment For Hospital In Brewster County

Alpine physicians met with the Brewster County Hospital designers to decide that only essential equipment will be bought initially. Dr. Joel Wright said purchases will be kept to a minimum as other equipment will be added later. Architect Ralph Davis said bid calls could occur in three to four months and active drawings must pass through county court, the State Health Department, and the Federal Government which will fund half the project. The doctors also approved noiseless tile floors for the hospital and discussed initial equipment needs.

Alpine Stores Open Later For Christmas Shoppers

Alpine merchants will keep most stores open until 8 p m Tuesday December 20 to aid Christmas shoppers next week. Temperatures were in the low 20s with heavy frost and last Sunday a trace of snow was noted at Sul Ross weather station.
