P J Simpson seaman recruit in the United States Navy toured Alpine High School campus Monday. He is stationed at San Diego Naval Training Center and a 1950 Alpine High School graduate. Simpson has 14 days leave and will resume training January 2. Admiral and Mrs Gerald Ogle will spend part of the holidays in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Warrants Approved for Water Rights Land Purchase

City Commission on Monday night approved issuing 70000 in time warrants to pay for the W. H. Tar Terry Jr. land acquisition. The parcel will be bought to secure water rights and the land and improvements will be sold by the city.

Burns Victim Juanita Vasquez Receives Community Aid

Alpine volunteers gather clothing and funds for Juanita Vasquez a 12 year old Mexican resident severely burned after a camp fire near the Rio Grande Her foster family aided her journey to Wright Hospital with help from Mrs Francis Rooney and local groups The Juanita Vasquez Fund care of The Avalanche Alpine accepts gifts and will forward them to appropriate agencies The response includes clothing from Catholic groups and money totaling 24 74 from various contributors along with volunteer efforts by Alpine High School girls and local clubs

Baptist Brotherhood Hosts Boy Scouts Court of Honor

Boy Scouts of Troop 44 were entertained with a supper by the Baptist Brotherhood in the church Monday night. A Court of Honor followed the meal as Dr Bevington Reed led the investiture and Dr Bryan Wildenthal presented achievement awards assisted by Joe Chitwood Don Littleton and Dr George Thomason.

Fifth Grade Wins PTA Room Award

Mrs Letty Jean Axin's Alpine Central fifth grade won the PTA Room award at the December meeting. The program included a two act play by Brenda Logan Barbara Davis and Betty Jean Clark directed by Mrs Hallie Veale and Mrs Mary Bo. Central Chorus performed four Christmas songs.

Mrs. Burnham Laid To Rest After Alpine Pioneer Life

Funeral services for Mrs. J. T. Burnham, 77, pioneer Brewster County resident since 1908, were held at 2 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church. Survived by two daughters, a son, five grandchildren, a great grandchild and two brothers, burial followed at Kin Grove Cemetery with pallbearers including Judge Felix McGaughy and Jack Johnson.

Alpine students perform band concert at high school

About 160 Alpine Public School students performed a band concert in Alpine High Auditorium on Tuesday night. The Beginner's Band of 40 from Alpine Central, the Junior Hugh Band of 60 from Alpine Centennial and Alpine Central, and the Buck Band of 60 played multiple instrumental numbers and accompanied five vocal pieces with audience participation. An open house for band parents followed in the Band Hall.
