Avalanche notes Alpine ties and veteran stories in Alpine area

Josephine Linn Dies In Orange

Josephine Linn, member of a pioneer Texas family, died Wednesday at Frances Ann Luther Hospital in Orange Texas after a short illness. Born March 19 1893 in Victor she was daughter of Edward Daniel Linn editor of the Victoria Advocate. She taught in Alpine and Victoria schools and served as principal at Victoria Junior High before joining Orange Public Schools as principal of Colburn Elementary.

Foster Memorial Service Planned

A memorial worship service for Mrs. Lucy Foster, 76, will be at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Davis at 5 p.m. on Tuesday December 13. She died Tuesday morning at her daughter's home. She served as organist for all Protestant churches in Fort Davis and lived there 30 years. Funeral services were held yesterday in Marlin, her birthplace. Survivors include her daughter Mrs Espy Miller a sister Mrs Pearl Bradford of Denver three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The Guit O O No 1 Combs well in Brewster County about one mile southeast of Marathon was underway at a depth of 2565 feet, drilling through lime and shale per the latest report.

Lassiter Named Texas Lady in State Contest

Mrs. Sera Clark nominates Berta Lassiter of Centennial School as Texas Lady winner in a San Antonio Express contest tied to the film Texas Lady starring Claudette Colbert. Lassiter, a ranchwoman and teacher, to visit Hollywood. Granada Theater to host opening with Lassiter and Alpine residents. Big Bend Sunday School schedules a 10 am carol service with student posters on display.

Last Rites Held For Patsy Beck

Funeral services were held for Patsy Roberts Beck 33 at the Presbyterian Church in Alpine. Mrs Beck died after a short illness in Providence Memorial Hospital El Paso. She was born Oct 8 1921 near Fort Davis and was survived by her mother two brothers and two nephews. Pallbearers and out of town relatives attended the service.

Alpine to Play Marfa Tuesday in High Gym Clash

Big Bend Stock Show Set for January 21 at Alpine

The 12th Annual Big Bend 4 H and FFA Livestock Show is scheduled for Saturday January 21 at Alpine s Big Bend Wool and Mohair warehouse. Frank Newsom reports plans were finalized at a supervisors meeting with three FFA chapters and two 4 H clubs. 83 youth will exhibit 21 baby beeves 250 fat lambs and 10 head of breeding sheep with FFA chapters Fort Davis Mattern Alpine and Brewster Jeff Davis counties involved.

Alpine Man Wins in Meats Judging Contest

Kenneth G. Killion of Alpine son of Mr and Mrs J D Killion placed first in beef grading and fifth in pork judging at the International Intercollegiate Meats Judging Contest in Chicago. He is a Texas A M student and ranked 12th high individual overall.

Santa Claus Arrives Saturday for Alpine Christmas Event

The old gentleman will be in Court House Square at 4 p.m. to give gifts of candy and fruit to Alpine children. The Alpine High School Band will provide Christmas music from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Lights around town will be turned on Saturday night as chaired by John Richard Whiteside on the Chamber lighting committee. Ed Morrell strung the lights, connected by West Texas Utilities Co. Stores stock new Christmas merchandise and merchants anticipate a strong buying season.

One Hundred Methodists Expected For Alpine District Meet

One hundred Methodist pastors and laymen are expected for the El Paso District Methodist Conference to be held in Alpine next Tuesday December 13. Bishop W Angie Smith will preside with District Superintendent Edwin Parner. The program includes district business planning and inspection of the new Mexican Methodist Church, with an address by Bishop Smith at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the First Methodist Church. A supper will be served in the Community Center by the Alpine VSCS. The conference closes at noon Wednesday.

Mrs Ada Carter Dies In Alpine

Funeral services for Mrs Ada Ann Carter 75 will be at 1 30 p m in the First Methodist Church Alpine burial in Elm Grove Cemetery She lived in Alpine since 1912 and died after a long illness in a local hospital Monday night Born August 28 1980 in Longtown Mississippi she studied at Oxford College She married Sug Carter in 1905 He died February 1948 Survivors include two sons Floyd W Carter Pecos Tom W Carter Clinton Tenn two daughters Grace Carter Scott Alpine and Mrs R A ds Dharan Saudi Arabia five grandchildren She joined the Methodist Church August 19 1917

Three Sul Ross Lobos Named to All Conference Team

Sul Ross Lobos earned three spots on the 1955 All Conference list. C. C. Brawley a 260 pound tackle from Garland Texas and Ivy Hunt a 195 pound guard from Bartlett Texas were named to the all star team with Brawley noted as the only freshman. Connie Rudd a 180 pound guard from Stwater Texas received honorable mention.

Sul Ross Lobos Host ENMU and McMurry in Weekend Games

Sul Ross aims to extend its four game win streak as it hosts Eastern New Mexico University and McMurry College in Texas Conference basketball. ENMU, led by three returning scorers Roy Franse Dennis Mitchell and Edwardee, is viewed as stronger this year while Sul Ross seeks revenge for last season's 68 66 defeat. Cubs Orioles Exhibition Set For Kobernot Field

Big League baseball returns to Kobernot Field in Alpine on April 5 1956 for an exhibition between the Chicago Cubs and the Baltimore Orioles. Cubs traveling secretary Robert C Lewis has arranged player and press accommodations at the Holland hotels. The last major league exhibition here was in spring 1954. Host H L Kokernot invites visiting teams to the ball diamond.

Presidio Lions Club Chartered at Ojinaga Banquet

Sixteen Alpine Lions Club members helped charter the Presidio Lions Club during a banquet in Ojinaga Mexico. John Colwell presented a flag stand pole and eagle while Marvin Kay issued an extension award to Ojinaga president S ipitanachi. Vice-Consul Mario Tapia Ponce arrives in Alpine to take charge of the Mexican Consulate. He succeeds Consul Ralph Linares, reassigned to Austin. The couple will move to Austin this weekend. the new appointee came from McAllen.

Post Office Windows To Be Open Saturday

Alpine post office to stay open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays December 10 and 17 to aid Christmas mailing. On Saturday afternoon December 44 a window will stay open for all services except money orders and postal savings.
