On Tuesday Pecos County held the annual Red Cross Roll Call and collected 148 dollars. Miss Annabelle Horn and Shirley Scales noted several conflicts with the drive but praised the soliciting committees for their work across the county.
Westminster Chorus of Westminster College Princeton N J will broadcast Christmas music next Monday night December 19 at 7 30 over station WII New York City via remote control. The item mentions Merle Bennett Friesen and Wm C Friesen, and a tangential note about a nine day delay and a jail sentence for J Ring of Ventura California unrelated to the program.

Entries require an expense report. the event honors the Central Power and Light Company and multiple local clubs.
Alpine High Bucks arrive at Grandfalls for tournament after a 40 11 win over Marfa High and a 36 28 victory over Sanderson. Seegraves tapped to start in the first Grandials game set for tomorrow morning as the team aims for another title.
The Alpine High School Bucks dominated the Rankin tournament in Upton County, defeating Westbrook 136 to 21 in the final to claim the title. Sublett contributed major scoring, and Olesabe sunk the winning goal in extra time. Rankin Red Davila and Kermit also stood out in hotly contested matches.
A fire of undetermined origin caused damage of several hundred dollars to the Masonic building. It started in a kitchen trash box and burned part of a partition wall and damaged the ceiling. Alpine’s volunteer fire department put it out with minimal water damage and insurance is carried on the building.
Mrs. LA Herring 06 a former Alpine resident died at her San Angelo home after a brief illness of heart trouble. She is survived by her husband and three daughters. Burial took place in San Angelo. The underpass project on Route 90 67 through Alpine plans full street paving and curb plus walls along the north side and part of the south side. Project cost about 40000 with federal aid, to be completed within 100 working days after award. Work planned to start early next year pending no delays.
Sul Ross College and the city school system will dismiss next Wednesday afternoon for Christmas holidays. Classes will resume the morning of January 3.
A Christmas carol festival will be held Sunday afternoon at 5 o clock at the First Presbyterian church. Choirs from Alpine churches join the Presbyterian choir to present a service inviting all to attend and participate in the Christmas music event.
Alpine area experiences a cold snap with frigid air arriving Monday through Wednesday. After milder fall like conditions, temperatures moderated yesterday as the cold wave moves in at the start of the week.
Supporters of a proposed Big Bend park in Texas say it will raise the state's share of national recreational travel dollars. A National Park Service report shows Texas ranked eighth in tourist spending in 1997 with 189.39 million and per capita expenditure of 3020 dollars. Backers predict longer stays and greater travel distances will lift total and per person spending. The park's scenic appeal is cited as drawing more outsiders to Texas and enhancing advertising value for tourism.
The County Health committee met Monday at four with Chairman Mrs Guy Crawford presiding. Present were secretary Mrs Gard and nurses Miss M Claire McGuire and others. Dr Ernest W Prothro spoke on health unit organization and service followed by a discussion on crippled children services led by Mr J J Brown. County officials and Alpine representative Homer Moorman attended.
Alpine youths filled the Cactus theatre with nuts toys fruit and candy for the Lions club Christmas Cheer program. Admission included a gift toward the community Christmas tree as Lions president J B Arledge thanked supporters and theatre management for the donation of the building and film use.
The American Legion Auxiliary announces a national prize of 200 dollars for the top Fidac essay with 15 and 10 dollar awards for second and third place. A 10 dollar state prize is offered for the best essay on Queen Marie of Roumania as ambassador of international goodwill. Open to high school students. essays up to 1500 words.
