Deer Season Closes As Winners Named At Big Bend Club

The Big Bend Sportsman's Club lists daily winners from Rankin San Angelo Fort Davis Alpine and Fort Stockton with prizes of gold trophies for the heaviest deer. TB Low shot a 196 pound animal highest so far and Buck Jones earned the largest horn set at 112 percent points. A $100 rifle or shotgun and a 22 rifle will be awarded for top horns.

Alpine Population Rises to 4740 in New Census Figures

Final census figures for Alpine show 4740 residents, up 10 from May preliminary. Brewster County totals reach 6494, with other area counts for Marathon 1020, Jeff Davis 1582, Presidio 5460, Pecos 11957, and related towns and divisions. The Census Bureau notes boundary changes affected division designations.

Mr Roberts To Be Staged At Fine Arts Theater

The Fine Arts Theatre on Sul Rass campus hosts a production of Mr. Roberts. The modern stage play follows a Navy cargo crew aboard a ship as they cope with boredom and authority. A local band announces a candy sale to fund their spring tour. The fundraiser runs Saturday December 10 and offers candy boxes for one dollar each to support travel and lodging costs for the upcoming year.

Confirmation Rites Postponed In Marfa Alpine Visit Cancelled

Confirmation services at St Pauls Episcopal Church Marfa are postponed due to illness of Bishop James Kinsolving of Santa Fe. Vicar William Anthony of St James Alpine was notified. Bishop Kinsolving also planned to visit Alpine. Services expected to be rescheduled for January, Mr Anthony said.

Range Conservation Stamp To Be Issued

The Post Office Department will issue the first range conservation commemorative stamp on February 2 in Salt Lake City Utah. The 4 cent stamp, printed in three colors, will be released at the annual meeting of the American Society of Range Management under joint sponsorship with USDA Forest Service Soil Conservation Service Interior Department Bureau of Land Management and Indian Service and the Post Office Department.

Messiah Oratorio Set at Sul Ross College Auditorium

One hundred singers from the tri county area and soloists from San Angelo will perform Handel's Messiah at 8 p.m. Sunday December 1 in the Sul Ross College Auditorium. The program is sponsored by Alpine Ministerial Alliance and Sul Ross College Fine Art Department. The piece first performed in 1742 drew royal applause and prompted generations to rise for the Hallelujah Chorus. The public is invited.

A four year letterman and senior class president, Lee stars in football and basketball for coach Clay Cade. Smith Rites Held Today for Joe L. Smith at 75

Funeral services were held at a Sanderson Presbyterian Church for Joe L. Smith 75 who died at Brewster County Memorial Hospital after a stroke. A longtime Alpine resident and former Sul Ross State College employee, he moved to Sanderson with his wife a year and a half ago. He leaves a wife, a son in Pecos, two daughters in Porterville California, and seven grandchildren. Graveside rites were planned at Yoakum.

Sul Ross Bucks travel to Marfa for the annual Marfa Invitational basketball tournament on Friday and Saturday December 9 and 10. Alpine faces Clint and San Felipe of Del Rio with Marta Van Henderson and Fabens also in the field. If the Bucks win the opening game they meet the Clint San Felipe winner at 7 pm Friday. a loss puts them in a 9 am Saturday game.

Jack Williams Found Unhurt After 24 Hour Mountain Search

Jack Williams assistant cashier of the First National Bank was found unhurt after about a 24 hour trek in the Davis Mountains Big Bend area. He went missing during a hunting trip with Rust Largent and was guided by Border Patrolmen to safety. A large search effort involved over 200 people traveling by foot horseback cars Jeeps trucks and planes. Williams suffered fatigue and dust but remained in good spirits and expressed thanks to all who assisted including Brewster County Search and Rescue Texas Ranger Arthur Mill Supt. Peyton Cain and many ranch hands and high school football players from Sul Ross College. Williams and Sargent left the ranch headquarters in a pickup and planned to meet later. the search continued in rugged terrain.

Alpine Man Survives Lost Ordeal in Davis Mountains

Alpine man recounts a brutal Sunday ordeal after getting lost during a deer hunt between Blue Mountain and nearby ranges. He describes a long trek, thirst, cold, and a rescue by Border Patrol at noon after wandering in rugged terrain with no matches or shelter. He thanks the search volunteers and rescuers for their efforts.

Travel To Big Bend Sees 7 Percent Visit Rise

Travel to Big Bend National Park grew more than 7 percent through November aided by excellent weather. Supt Stanley C. Joseph reports 1960 totals reached 71,526 visitors versus 66,730 last year to that point. All facilities including cottages lodge rooms campgrounds and picnics saw higher use. Thanksgiving weekend ranger programs attracted 269 attendees and overall November attendance rose sharply from the prior year as campground use increased.

Light snow sleet and freezing rain moved through the Davis Mountains country as a cold front settled in Tuesday night. The forecast warned of dangerous conditions, but no serious accidents were reported. KVLE records showed a 26 degree low this morning.

Wayland Lobos opened with a 70 88 win and 61 67 loss against New Mexico Western College and Wayland respectively. Alpine High girls beat Marathon 23 36 in A and B games at Alpine High Gym on Tuesday. Aida Hernandez led Alpine with 17 points. Sherry Thompson 14 for Marathon. Victoria Gallego 10 for Alpine. In B, Alpine guards smothered Marathon with 10 points total. Rosie Adamson led with 17. Next home game vs Van Horn on Friday.
