The AEC intensifies its uranium search in the Alpine area and hands the first prize, a large game rifle, to C. J. Dunn of Alpine for winning with 107 points. Dan St. Clair, a Sul Ross student, revives a 22 caliber rifle for the event.
Atomic Energy Commission geologist Thomas S. Nye is assigned to the Alpine Marta area in the Trans-Pecos Texas for uranium exploration. He will conduct geologic studies with ground and one air unit beginning early December under the Albuquerque office.
Amblin Around Alpine reports on deer season quirks from Bill Sohl at his ranch south east of town. The tale notes a 20 minute hunt from 5 30 pm to 5 50 pm with a buck landing in the pickup, plus other local hunting anecdotes and ranch life in Marathon and Alpine.
The quail season opened with reports of a robust deer hunt. Quail season runs December in Brewster Jeff Davis and Presidio counties with a 12 quail daily limit and 24 weekly possession. Deer totals rise with more quail than last year, figures from Fish Commission and Game biologists.
The Bucks open in Alpine Central against Sierra Blanca and begin district play in January, with coach James Crawford noting a smaller squad compared to state champions Seminole Indian and Pecos. Key returnees include Phil McGaughs Freddie Das Mis Terry Becket and Don Bur ee.
West Texas chiropractors plan a weekend retreat December 3 and 4 at Indian Lodge Davis Mountains. Dr. R. J. Spann of Odessa, president of the West Texas district, says the first day focuses on relaxation for attendees from at least 10 towns. Dr. Oliver Smith of El Paso will speak at the Sunday business meeting with many listed attendees from El Paso Pecos Monahans and other West Texas locales.
Mr and Mrs D M Bennett announce the sale of The Alpine Avalanche to Mr and Mrs James W Glasscock effective Dec 1 They lease the building at 210 N 5th St The sale includes all typesetting printing equipment office furniture trade name Alpine Avalanche and goodwill The Alpine Publishing Co will be dissolved and future business will use The Alpine Avalanche name The staff includes Mayo Cleveland foreman and others The Bennetts will stay in Alpine and aid redevelopment Continued on Page 8
The city commission states that the US Geological Survey and Brewster County research locate an ample water supply about three miles northwest of Alpine. They urge residents to use the resource, rebuild lawns, plant trees and shrubs, and beautify the city for the summer.
State legislation is needed before construction of the Diablo Dam on the Rio Grande can begin. A Del Rio meeting Wednesday, Dec. 7, will discuss the proposed legislation and water rights, with Brewster County official Metin urging broad attendance for up to date information. The judge noted the distribution agency must be created to allocate waters impounded by Diablo, which would sit on the Rio Grande above Del Rio. Falcon Dam near Laredo is finished and a third dam is planned for the Big Bend area.
El Progreso Club meets today at 3 p.m. in the High School Home Economics Building with Mrs. Chalmers Broadfoot and Mrs. Keesey Kimball as hostesses. The program features a panel discussion on Mobilizing the Community to Move Ahead with Youth.

Atlas Corp led by Floyd Odlum weighs a Brewster County mineral deal with Universal Service Corp. A Salt Lake City geologist voices in on leases held by Universal Service, which faces SEC registration hurdles. Negotiations appear preliminary with potential large sums involved.
A hitch-hiker released from jail was ordered to avoid highways on Safe Driving Day after a Wednesday morning three vehicle collision injured Mr and Mrs Paul Adams of Marathon. The Adams were in a car that collided with another vehicle and a truck seven miles east.
Sul Ross Lobos debut with a new coach and talented lineup, overcoming a 1 point halftime deficit to win 64-58 against White Sands. Don Pearson and S Jones each scored 22, Pearson 14 field goals and 8 free throws, Jones 18 field goals. next home game December 10 vs Eastern New Mexico.
Weather Bureau station at Sul Ross College reports light drizzle followed by cold westerly wind. Preston area shows 11 inch reading, Ed Davidson Ranch north of town records 2 inches, and Pierce area near similar totals.
The Bre County service officer will be at the Legion Hall in Alpine weekly from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Monday starting December 1 to assist all veterans. Veterans of all wars are urged to present their problems to the county service officer regardless of service organization membership.
L A McBee of Sanderson reports a favorable assay from Anderson Ranch about 21 miles south of Alpine. Samples from three surface locations show 0.136 percent uranium chemical and 0.15 percent TiO2 with a 0.10 threshold for commercial production. leasing partners hold 6,000 acres on a 10 year hard mineral lease. Plans for development are not yet made.
The city will issue time warrants this week to purchase the W. H. (Tar) Terry Jr. property. The ordinance authorizes $70.00 in warrants to obtain water rights from the land and to sell the property after purchase, noting a producing well drilled last summer by Brewster County and the U. S. Geological Survey.
The Beta Iota Chapter of Dena Kappa Gamma will host its Christmas dinner on December 3 at the Pilot Lodge in Marfa instead of the Paisano Hotel as previously announced in the Beta Iota News.
