8 Day Deer Hunting Season Opens Today With Wool Contest

The 8 day deer season opens today as 20 girls enter the senior division of the Make It Yourself with Wool contest at Kokernot Lodge Alpine. Senior contestants include Joyce Woody Crane and Shera Dave Besley Dell City. Junior division entrants list names from Eddy to Pecos to Clint and Odessa with entries from Fort Stockton, Alpine, and El Paso.

Alpine High School girls basketball opens a 14 game slate plus three tournaments starting December with Van Horn. The squad of 23, led by coach Faye Reed, includes A and B teams with players listed by position, aiming to overcome height as a key factor and show strong season potential.

Alpine Marfa Ranchers Buy Part Interest In Herd Sire

Alpine and Marfa ranchers purchase a two thirds interest in Real Ideal a proven sire from Holyoke Colorado. Joe T Lane and J E White Jr of Marfa acquire the stake Fulcher retains one third. Real Ideal will be used in Lane and White herds with Fulcher using him artificially. He is a son of Golden Real and linked to Real Prince Domino breeding. Hamiet to Be Presented at Sul Ross College

Shakespearean style production Hamiet opens tonight at Sul Ross State College Fine Arts Auditorium Alpine. Cast includes Dan Shockey and Dorothy Jackson with students Andy Owens Jr Nelda Almquist Rita Christian Joy Hewitt and Joan Welker. Dr Katharine Boyd directs the play.

Bucks Split At Valentine In Season Opener

Alpine Bucks open a 60-61 season in Valentine with an A game loss 21-28 but win the B game 45-1. Manuel Perez led Valentine with 18 points while Wallace Peters added 15 for Alpine. In the B game Darryl Mueller topped Alpine with 15 points as Joe Wright and Joe Molinar followed.

300 To Hunt At Black Gap 300 To Hunt At Black Gap

Three hundred hunters are expected to participate in an eight day deer shoot in the Black Gap Preserve in Brewster County beginning today. Tom Moore, state game biologist, says 402 names were drawn and a kill of 150 deer expected. Each hunter has two days to hunt. A public hunt is planned in the Sierra Diablo area of Culberson County with 80 permits and an expected kill of 10 deer. Last year Black Gap had 45 percent success and Sierra Diablo 50 percent.

Grand Jury Action In Clay Case Delayed To Feb 1961

The Clay murder case against Mrs. Dorothy Clay is not expected to reach grand jury until February 1961. District Attorney Norman Davis said the February Brewster County term begins Feb 13, 1961, with Shelby Blaydes set to become district attorney on Jan 1, 1961. Mrs. Clay posted a $1000 bond after being charged with murder with malice. she was hospitalized for shock after the Nov 24 Cottage on Sul Ross College campus shooting that killed Arthur W. Clay, her husband.

Messiah Soloists Announced for Sul Ross Performance

Final arrangements set for Handel’s Messiah at Sul Ross College Auditorium on Sunday December 11 starting at 8 p.m. About 100 singers from Alpine Fort Davis Odessa San Angelo and surrounding areas will perform with Ellen Black bass C I Riley tenor and Sherry Kemp soprano among announced soloists. Mrs. Lola McAfee's Mother Buried in San Saba County

Mrs. S. J. Land mother of Mrs. Lola B. McAfee of Alpine died in Sweetwater Monday and was buried Tuesday in Richland Springs Cemetery. She was 78, born in 1892, married to Mr. Land in 1900, who died in 1949. Survived by seven daughters, thirteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Record Kill Expected In Trans-Pecos Deer Hunt

Texas Game and Fish Commission biologist Tom Moore predicts a record Trans-Pecos black tail deer season beginning today. The Big Bend Sportsman's Club sponsors a contest with $1 registration for first prize options of rifle or shotgun, plus prizes for heaviest deer. Civil Air Patrol will standby for search and rescue.

Regulations define deer open season and bag limits

Open season for mule and white tailed deer runs December 1 to 6 with a two deer bag per season limit. Only one mule deer may be taken. Permitted combinations include various buck and anterless pairings. Anterless deer require special permits in designated areas by the Game and Fish Commission.

Rescue Squad Organized in Brewster County

Carl Williams Jr. announces Brewster County Rescue Squad formed to aid Alpine and county emergencies. The group partners with Civil Defense, will use Big Bend Telephone for dispatches, and fields four-person squads led by lieutenants Gordon Barrow Elmer McMillan Baker and Ll Sud Powers. Alpine Fire Chief J C Cooley permits use of fire department pickup for emergencies.

Antelope Kill Sets Record in Trans-Pecos Hunt

Game Biologist Tom Moore reported a record antelope kill in the 1960 Trans-Pecos season with 1400 to 1490 animals killed. About 1600 hunters took part after 2050 licenses issued. he noted all ranches reported except three with 40 permits involved.

The Pilot Club will hold a rummage sale Friday and Saturday December 2 and 3 in the building next to Western Union. People with rummage to donate are asked to call a Pilot Club member and it will be picked up.

R. M. Harvey Dies in Clyde Texas

R M Harvey died suddenly Monday at his Clyde Texas home after living in Alpine in the 1940s and 1990s. He was an American National Insurance agent in the area.

Park To Build New Stations In Big Bend National Park

National Park Service invites bids to construct two comfort stations at Chisos Mountains campground and one at Rio Grande Village campground in Big Bend. Each 400 square foot facility will have concrete foundation, plywood walls, plumbing, electric, water, and septic systems. Bids open January 12, 1961, at 2 p.m. at Big Bend superintendent’s office as part of the Mission 66 program.

Navy Officer Programs Team Visits College This Week

The U S Navy Recruiting Station Albuquerque invites students at Ross College to meet today and on December 1 and 2 in the student union. Officers programs and Navy flight training brochures will be available and the required mental examinations will be given to interested students.
