Mr. Louie Hess Remembered for Life of Service

L. L. Hess 82 died last Tuesday in San Antonio where he lived. Funeral held Friday in his memory, described as a life of service to others in the Big Bend area. Frank O. Ray Alpine attorney offers tribute detailing his friend’s character and impact.

A Great Man Who Served Many Through Quiet Strength

L. L. Hess born October 5 1866 in Burlington Iowa died November 23 1948 in San Antonio Texas. He moved to Marathon Texas in 1884 and ran a mercantile business and a ranch, founded Marathon State Bank and loaned millions without hardship to neighbors. Known as Mr Louie he was plain in life but great in service, a man who gave to others and depicted virtue through daily conduct. The obituary notes his marriage to Margaret J Koett and his long dedication to education and community welfare.

R. S. Yarbrough Former Alpine Resident Dies

R S Bob Yarbrough 45 formerly of Alpine died last Friday morning of a heart attack in Fort Stockton. He lived in Alpine for years before moving there in 1941 and was a wholesale agent for Continental Oil Co and Magnolia Petroleum Co since his move. He is survived by his widow and two sons. Funeral services were held in Fort Stockton with burial there. Alpine friends attended the service.

Hymn Sing at First Methodist Church This Sunday

An old fashioned carol sing will be produced at the First Methodist Church this Sunday evening at 0 o clock. An invitation is extended to any who like to sing to be present.

Mobile X-ray Unit Is Being Sought

The 1948 Christmas Seals fund drive by Brewster County Tuberculosis association asks residents to buy Seals to support TB prevention. Seal sales run through December 25 with over 80 percent of proceeds kept locally and plans for 1949 include school screenings and a mobile X-ray unit.

Auditorium Proposal At Paisano Pass Encampment

Architect Will N. Noonan of San Antonio submits sketches to Paisano Baptist Assembly leaders for a functional auditorium on the Encampment grounds in Paisano Pass. A committee studies the concept aiming to seat about two thousand, with two classroom wings that can be opened to link to the main hall for summer and winter use.

Alpine Grants 14 Building Permits for November

The Alpine city office lists 14 permits for new residences and related structures in November. Projects include W. E. Williams six room tile residence, Dunnington six room frame stucco home, several army unit remodellings, garages, a warehouse, and store building.

Mrs. Whiteside Dies at Home in Travis Funeral Set

Mrs. M. C. Whiteside died yesterday at 11 40 a m at her daughter Mrs Geo H Storey s home in Travis Texas She was born January 12 1853 she would have been 93 next January 12 Funeral services will be at the Travis Methodist church tomorrow at 3 pm Interment with husband s remains later carried overland by Livingston Funeral Home Survived by three sons and four daughters all expected at the funeral A fuller life sketch appears next week in the Avalanche Jimmy Kidd of McAllen visited here earlier this week.

Our Lady of Fatima Statue Visits Alpine Area Today

The Our Lady of Fatima statue arrives at Marfa Army Air Base at 8 45 a m for a nine to noon appearance at Our Lady of Peace Church Alpine. It then travels by car to St Josephs Fort Davis and St Marys Marfa, staying until 730 p m. The pilgrimage is led by Rochester layman Joseph Benn executive secretary of the Rochester Nocturnal Adoration Society.

Dr J E Wright Buys Nevill Property In Big Bend Area

Dr J E Wright acquired the Nevill property at the corner of Holland avenue and North 4th street, long owned by Mr and Mrs Ed Nevill. The Nevills have moved to Sonora where a son Tom resides. Alpine cafe sits on the lot, Nevill residence just north. No future plans announced. The Nevills were early Big Bend settlers around Alpine and the SP railroad era.

Big Bend Park to Acquire 324 Acres of Land

The National Park Service in Washington announced an option to buy 324 acres from Mr. and Mrs. W A Cooper near the northern park boundary. The tract links the park road system and is crossed by State Highway 227 making it vital for road connections. Additional small parcels are sought through donations or state funds as the service lacks funds for land purchases.

Alpine Schools Sponsor Drive For Used Clothing

The Alpine public schools will hold a used clothing drive from December 6 to December 10. The Student Council and Save the Children federation organize drop boxes at Central School Centennial School and the High School. All clean or mended clothing and sturdy shoes are welcome. sandals and high heels are not accepted.

Brisk Cattle Trade Report Across Marfa Alpine Marathon Districts

Cattle shipments move rapidly through Marfa Alpine Marathon Fort Davis routes. Turkin ton Brothers Letts of Iowa purchase eight calves from El Paso and Marfa mayor Dan Ponder, with others including Hillsman Davis, Kimball and Son, J W Merrill, Espy Miller, Kenneth Mellard, Mrs T C Crosson, and Smith Bros. Major sales include 1500 heifer calves and 509 heifer yearlings to Texas L S Marketing Assn and 800 cows plus 100 bulls shipped. Gage Ranches sells 3200 calves and yearlings to M Cohen in San Antonio and 750 cows to market.

Forty Miles of Hard Road Practically Assured on Park Route

The Texas State Highway Commission approved an additional 20 mile segment of Highway 118 from 20 miles south of Alpine to 40 miles south at a cost of 210000. Topping will wait until after winter. the project aims to connect Alpine to Big Bend National Park and eventually Carlsbad Caverns with an all paved highway. Work on Highway 90 east from Sul Ross College toward Alpine advances with grade work and bridge construction reducing dangerous curves for a smoother route.

Morrison Co opens new Alpine store at Sanderson site

C G Morrison Co of Alpine announces the Sanderson store acquisition from Sheppard’s. J J Morrison will manage the new outlet with Chalmers Broadfoot and Bill Kelley assisting on layout as fixtures are installed. The store will open late this week and be remodeled after the new year with updated fixtures and a broader assortment.

Miss Anne Mims Seeks Miss Aviation Title At El Paso

Miss Anne Mims of Sul Ross College competes in El Paso for Miss Aviation of 1949. The pageant supports the International Aviation celebration with pilots and residents from the southwest and Mexico. Mims, active on campus and a Sul Ross cheerleader, previously earned Miss Sul Ross and Miss Southwest titles in 1948. Alpine Jaycees wish her success in representing Sul Ross and the town.
