The Avalanche moves a No. 2 Miedle press 400 miles for new plant upgrade. Crews led by Don Littleton and Bill Dorris rewire for 3 phase power as a test run is planned tonight to iron out kinks. The press greatly boosts printing speed and capability, with open house planned after the holiday rush.

Remains of F-0 Joyce Returning for Burial

Telegram to Mr and Mrs Joyce from Bowan Co Columbus Ohio states remains of Flight Officer William G Joyce en route to the United States. Due to death circumstances the remains will be interred with comrades at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery Louisville Kentucky after joint services. Burial dates pending telegram from cemetery superintendent and could be delayed weeks by factors beyond control. FO Joyce was lost on a WWII Pacific theater mission.

Notice sets Monday December 13 as election day to elect county committeemen for 1949. Polls open 8 am to 5 pm at the county office in Alpine. Mail ballots sent to all eligible voters. Committee duties include administering National agricultural programs for Brewster County under the USDA.

Rotarians plan a Ladies Night program next Thursday at the Holland hotel ballroom. The Sul Ross Lobos and their ladies will attend as guests. The regular meeting is canceled. Rotarians unable to attend must sign the lobby register at noon and dine with their Ann.

Alpine Postoffice Extends Hours Two Saturdays

The Alpine postoffice will stay open until 6 p m on Saturday December 1 and Saturday December 18 to handle Christmas mail. Postmaster Annie K Turney urged residents to mail cards and packages early to avoid last minute congestion.

Mrs. M C Whiteside aged 95 years 10 months 20 days died Thursday December 2 at her daughter Mrs Georges H Stover home in Alpine after a long illness Born Mary Bridges Middlebrooks January 2 1853 in Harris County Georgia She lived in Mooreville Mississippi Rockwall Texas Travis and Alpine marriage to Major Calvin Whiteside in 1872 who died in 1923 She leaves 10 children 6 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren all survived She was a long time Methodist church member and attended services at Travis and other homes Continued on Page 8. There will be no admission charge.

Four Lobos on All Conference Team for 1948

Ted Scown of Sul Ross was a unanimous pick for the all New Mexico conference team. The NM Conference meeting at Albuquerque selected the annual all conference squad and 1949 schedules. Sul Ross led with four players on the first team, Adams State had three, NMMC had two, while Highlands and Panhandle Aggies had one each.

Lobos Prepare for Tangerine Bowl Showdown in Orlando

Sul Ross coaches drill the undefeated Lobos for a 1 600 mile road trip to the Tangerine Bowl on New Year’s night in Orlando Florida. Murray Teachers College of Murray Kentucky the Thro ughbreds are co champions of the Ohio Valley Conference with nine wins one defeat. The defense allowed only 65 points all season while Sul Ross scored 431. The matchup pits Murray’s strength against Sul Ross line and weather humidity in Orlando.

The Lobo Band, 75 members from 35 Texas towns and three other states, is led by majorette Pat Watson of Artesia New Mexico and directed by John Carrico of San Antonio. The group, praised for precise marching and strong musical ability, accompanies the Lobo football squad with a multirow photo featuring many members and missing names noted.

Jolly Old Fellow To Light At Stains Field And Ride Into Town

Santa Claus will visit Alpine on Saturday December 11 arriving at Starns airport at 430 pm. He will be escorted to the Central ward school campus by Sul Ross Lobo band then appear at the Christmas tree near the Southern Pacific station to receive letters and give candy. Citizens may submit names of shut ins to KVLF or the chamber of commerce to ensure every child is included.

Veterans Reorganize Sul Ross Area Group At Auditorium

Gene Hendryx of Alpine was elected president of the Sul Ross Sal Rosas Veterans during a Friday meeting to reorganize the group. Four vice presidents were chosen Phillip Newsom Robert Inglish Pecos Caldwell and Johnny R Powell Bettie Powell was named secretary treasurer. The 280 World War II veterans were urged to work with the American Legion and other veterans groups as the advisory council plans a concrete action program.

Modern Bendix Laundry To Be Opened In Alpine

The Bendix automatic washerette will open in Alpine before Christmas. Mr and Mrs O A Rittenhouse, former Austinites now operating the new enterprise, will run it in the old Standard Oil station on West Holland avenue. The building owned by T A Beard is being renovated to house the service and more machines will be added as demand grows.
