Long Distance Phone Improvements Planned in Local Area
G. R. Montgomery Jr. of Southwestern Bell Telehpone Co announced plans to upgrade long distance lines between Alpine and Marathon, Alpine and Marfa, and Marathon and Sanderson. The $142,000 project will replace iron wire with copper, add 236 miles of wire, 12 poles, 2310 cross arms, and 15 300 feet of cable to boost service.

Oil Drilling Updates Near Marathon and Alpine
Gulf No. 1 Combs wildcat near Marathon is drilling at 2135 feet in lime and shale. Sun Oil No. 1 McElroy, 38 miles southwest of Alpine, has been plugged and abandoned after drilling below 8400 feet.

Deer Hunters Bring Business in Big Bend Area
Deer hunters swarmed over the Big Bend and Davis Mountains country this week boosting local trade. Three hundred registered in the trophy contest run by the Big Bend Sportsmen's Club. By Wednesday noon 19 deer were measured with C. T. Dunn of Alpine leading, weighing 164 pounds with 15 points and a 26 inch spread, totaling 107 points.
