Shirley Seales, chairman, reports only 123 raised so far for the annual Red Cross drive. Marathon sent 348 last week while Alpine contributors remain. Seales urges immediate gifts of 20 each, noting most funds stay locally.
A child sustained burns from water in an auto storage battery. It was not believed the child swallowed any liquid, and the injuries were limited to the youth. The child was reported to be recovering.
Drury Wood, superintendent of the Del Rio schools, was elected vice-president of the Federated Exe Students association of the Texas Teachers colleges at a Dallas meeting last weekend. Wood, son of Capt and Mrs C Wood of Alpine, previously headed Alpine schools for five years and is a Sul Ross college graduate.
Mrs Fay Vice, critic teacher at Sul Ross college, was elected president of the Texas Columbia University club for 1998 39 at a Dallas dinner on Thanksgiving Day. She holds a Master of Arts degree from Columbia and is hailed as a signal honor for the Alpine teacher.

The State Highway department announced bids due December 1 for four bridges on highway 90 from east of Sanderson to the county line. One bridge spans Sanderson canyon east of town and two spans over the same canyon west of town, plus a fourth over Three Mledraw. Construction covers about 3967 miles with an estimated cost near 193000 dollars. El Pearce, resident engineer, says work may start January first, pending contract letting. About 45 Rotarians from Marfa Presidio Ojinaga and Alpine attended a Sunday afternoon joint meeting in Marfa. Ernesto Laveaga now in Alpine as Mexican consul spoke urging language education more meetings like this, more travel and less prejudice to foster cross border friendship.
