Gunmen Rob Texas Couple Near Alpine

A Big Spring couple, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Basden, were robbed of nearly $400 in cash and jewelry at a roadside park east of Alpine around 7 pm on Wednesday November 16. The robbers, wearing coveralls and dark clothing, disabled the Basdens’ car and waited for a passing motorist to seek help before the Brewster County sheriff’s office was alerted at 8 pm. The attackers fled in a vehicle.

Sul Ross Lobos Close 7 3 Football Season At Home

The Sul Ross Lobos defeated Howard Payne 10 in the season finale at Jackson Field to finish 7 3. Key drives included Hatfield Phillips and Dunham scoring early and in the third, while Jim Hollingsworth and Cantrell sparked drive sequences. Sul Ross ended Lone Star Conference play 4 3, with Texas A I and Lamar Tech among top teams.

Highland Hereford Bull Sale Set for Dec 14 at Marfa

Plans completed for the Highland Hereford Sale to be held December 14 at the Highland Sale Pavilion Marfa Fairgrounds. Judging begins December 13 with the heifer event at 2 pm and bull judging at 10 am. Auction at 1 pm features 58 registered bulls and 150 commercial heifers.

KVLF To Broadcast A&M Texas Contest Thanksgiving Day

KVLF Alpine will air the Texas A&M vs Texas game Thanksgiving Day starting at 1 15 pm sponsored by Humble Oil and Refining Co. The telecast will also be shown on KMID TV Midland. Incident reports include a robbery where Mr Basden lost 55 in cash and Mrs Basden 38 plus a 900 valued faring and a watch as suspects fled toward Alpine then north toward Fort Stockton.

Jim Roberts Pioneer of Brewster County Dies

Jim Roberts longtime Marathon ranch foreman and Hereford cattle breeder died in a San Antonio hospital after a long illness at age. A Navarro County native, he moved to Brewster in 1686 with J C and Mary Roberts, later joining A S Gage Ranches. Survived by Alma Brown Roberts and children Travis Jack and Mary, service held in San Antonio with interment at Mission Burial Park.

Big Bend Players Call Meeting At Sul Ross Campus

Big Bend Players schedule a 7 30 p m meeting Wednesday November 23 in the Fine Arts Building on Sul Ross State College campus. Mrs Nelle Mae Mellroy urged all members to attend. Supt Peyton Cain attended Mountain Area School Administrators meeting in Marfa Monday morning. Enrollment remained at 1086 this week, six under the three week record of 1101.

Thanksgiving Service Set For Thursday at Union

Thanksgiving service scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Clanton Newbill as host pastor. Rev. R. E. Streetman of the Baptist Church will be the speaker, joined by other ministers in the ministerial alliance. Music directed by Glenn Davis. Before the union service, Rev. William Anthony will conduct Holy Communion at 4 a.m. in St James Episcopal Church.

Alpine students will begin holiday recess Friday December 8 and return to classes Tuesday January 3. The period covers the two-week break with no additional events noted.

Castolon To Get Electric Line From Oak Springs

The Rio Grande Electric Cooperative and the National Park Service have signed agreements to extend electric power from Oak Springs to Castolon in Big Bend National Park. The 30 mile line will be built by Irby Construction Co under J Lyman Davis with work starting soon and completion aimed for mid January 1961 serving Maverick Mountain Ranger Station and Castolon facilities.

Alpine plans Christmas lights on Saturday night November 28 with stringing beginning Monday. Santa Claus visits December 3 at the Court House with candy gifts for children. City Begins Drilling Meriwether Well

The city awarded a drilling contract to R. G. Dixon for a Meriwether Ranch water well northwest of Alpine near Sunny Glen. The bid was 8.30 per first 100 feet or 7 per last 400 feet, with 12 percent net hole and 4 inch casing. Drilling targets 400 feet or until water production. test in Duff Trachyte rock. Water expected after reaching 200 feet.
