Letter From Davis Bey Before Bataan Fall Reaches Parents
Fort Davis Aug 26 A letter from Bataan written February 20 has reached Mr and Mrs J B McBiride formerly of Fort Davis from their son Myrrl of the 200th anti aircraft regiment New Mexico It is the first word from Myrrl since last November and no word has arrived since February The letter was written weeks before the surrender Myrrl attended Sul Ross College Alpine two years and the University of New Mexico one year he enlisted March 1941 and was at the initial Japanese attack route 2 box 5 Justin Texas The note mentions mail carried from the Philippines by submarine and a torpedoed ship and that Myrrl may have been among pouches recovered”

Junk Drive Plans Abolished Packed War Scrap Effort
Plans for handling scrap during the nationwide drive are announced by Mrs. Mary Raum Brewster county ACA secretary and rally chair. Junk collected goes to VB Oil Co yard for weighing with receipts issued and checks at roughly six dollars per hundred. County trucks will haul junk to Marathon and Alpine points. final rally next Saturday Sept 5 with Boy Scouts and Alpine FFA sponsoring a downtown parade.

First Group of Trainees at New Flying School Expected Soon
Col Gerald Hoyle, to command the advanced flying school between Marfa and Alpine, was in Alpine last weekend with Captain US Engineers in charge of construction. He said the first contingent of trainees would arrive within six to eight weeks, with instruction on operating twin engine planes.

Lieut. Derrell D. York, son of Mrs Linnie York of Alpine, passed through here last week en route to Miami for air corps training. He had been in Camp Roberts California since July in field artillery. A Alpine High School and Texas University graduate, he previously headed the science department at Georgetown High School before volunteering for service.

Fraser's Father Dies in Pennsylvania Heart Attack
District Attorney Alan Fraser left Tuesday night for Ridgford Pennsylvania after the sudden death of his father J M Fraser at 9 30 p m from a heart attack. Fraser was a prominent oil operator and known in Alpine from prior visits. He traveled from Pecos to Fort Worth by train with plans to proceed to Pennsylvania by plane. Stamps will be in class 4 3. Physically unfit objectors will be classified F.
