Golf Tournament Opens Saturday at Alpine Country Club
Over 18 golfers are expected to participate in the Alpine Country Club event with Sam Billy Warn in charge of arrangements. Qualifying winds will be played Saturday and the first flight starts at 6 30 am. The Calcutta Night will be held Saturday and after the tournament, work to revamp tees and greens will begin. Grass tees are planned and the golf lab arranged with the city to obtain water from the course well.

Train service restored after Tesnas derailment in Brewster County
Southern Pacific line between El Paso and San Antonio returned to service less than 24 hours after 40 freight cars derailed at Tesnas in Eastern Brewster County. The accident occurred about 9 am Saturday. Brakeman Robert Treloar and hobo Harry Harford, 56, of Auburn New York, were injured. Treloar received treatment in Wright Clinic and at the railroad hospital in Houston. Harford remained in the clinic.

Alpine Public Schools will open September 6 1953 for the 1953 56 year with a schedule approved by the Board of Trustees. The calendar shows six week periods including Thanksgiving and Christmas turnout, with semesters ending January 13 and January 16 start, spring break, and final exams in May. Total 177 school days under Gilmer Aikin rules, similar to 1954 55, no Saturday classes. Alpine Bucks football preps start August 22 ahead of Sept 2 opener. seven conference games in seven weeks due to district realignment. High school preregistration begins August 22.

In Brewster County the district court grand jury convened with women serving for the first time. Alpine residents Nellie Ferguson J Frank Woodward Ernestina Alvarado Hipolita Valenzuela plus Vada Todd Marathon joined other jurors. Two indictments followed a Monday session Edward Pope on car theft and Robert Greenwood on a fondling charge. Pope pled guilty to two years in the penitentiary. Greenwood’s trial set for Sept. 22.

CAL Drops Fight For TTA's Route
Continental Airlines will not intervene in a Civil Aeronautics Board hearing in Washington on September 7 on Trans Texas route between El Paso and Dallas. Milton F. Young of San Angelo said representatives of Marfa and Alpine need not attend. A CAB examiner had recommended Continental be granted El Paso Dallas, a route Trans Texas has served seven years. Young noted Marfa Alpine airport boardings are 30 percent ahead of last year.

Brewster Polio Case Reported Second Shots Urged
A polio case was reported in Brewster County this week as doctors continued giving second Salk vaccine shots to first and second grade children. Lupe Terrazas, four, son of Mr and Mrs Santiago Terrazas of Marathon, had a light bulbar polio with partial paralysis in both arms. He was taken to the Medical Center Hospital in Odessa and placed in the polio ward, transported by an air conditioned car loaned by Mrs Henry Bailey. Dr John W Pate of Alpine said the second shot should be administered as soon as possible. Brewster County had 34 original vaccine doses.
