The Alpine area records the heaviest rainfall in years with up to two inches in towns and ranches. Rain and an electrical storm disrupted service briefly, then restored. Roads into Big Bend NP closed temporarily as waters rose. McDaniel resigns as Alpine Chamber of Commerce manager to take a post as substitute clerk in the Alpine Post Office effective Sept 1.

Marathon School Opens September 5 With Welcome Events

Marathon Schools will open for the term at 9 am Monday September 5. Supt Earl Bland invites the public to opening exercises from 9 to 10 am. Registration runs from 10 to noon for all grades. Classes begin 8 45 am Tuesday September 6. New students must bring birth and doctor vaccination certificates.

Sul Ross Names New Cage Coach

Sul Ross College appoints 30 year old Galloway as coach for basketball and baseball replacing H M Hedrick. A Oklahoma A&M graduate he led Connors State College teams to a 147 10 record and national tournament appearances. He starred at Drury College and Springfield Teachers College and earned degrees from Oklahoma A&M. He and his wife have three children.

Brewster Produces First Cotton Bales In Trans Pecos Area

The first 1955 irrigated cotton bales were grown in Brewster County. Two bales were produced at Lajitas along the Rio Grande by Joe Miles of Alpine and ginned at the L H Farmers Gin in Balmorhea last Friday. The 1517 variety weighed 1019 pounds in total.

Travel US 90 Highway Association executives in Del Rio approved seeking an extension of Route 90 into San Diego California from Van Horn Texas. The minutes noted a push to connect northern border routes and ease motorist confusion while stressing the potential benefits for tourism and regional centers along the Gulf coast and southwest.

Montgomery Named As Area Phone Manager

S R Montgomery was named telephone manager for the Fort Stockton Alpine Big Bend area with headquarters in Fort Stockton. He replaces Gilbert A Eimann who moves to unit manager in Fort North. Montgomery is a Fort Worth native, a Texas Christian University graduate, and joined the company three years ago in Fort Worth rising to supervisor of coin collection. He will oversee all telephone activities in the Fort Stockton group and is a member of the Masonic Lodge and Methodist Church.

Ralph Linares Promoted to Full Consul in Alpine

Ralph Linares is promoted from vice consul to full consul for the Mexican Government announced in Alpine. He has served in the Consulate here since December 1952. A new chancellor, Eduardo Perez, arrives to replace Jose Luis Enciso, coming from Los Angeles and trading posts with Enesto.

Floyd Appointed Alpine SP Agent

J. M. Floyd of Marathon has been named Southern Pacific agent for Alpine and will assume his post about Sept. 5. He succeeds Earl Petross who retired last month. Floyd has a long railroad career with T&NO and SP, including recent Marathon service and prior posts in Flatonia, Alpine, and El Paso. He and Mrs. Floyd will move to Alpine shortly after Sept. 1.

KVLF to Overhaul Equipment Amid Limited Schedule

KVLF Radio will operate on a limited schedule this week while undergoing a complete overhaul of all station equipment. Manager Gene Hendryx states new gear will be added and existing units rebuilt, with Louis Gempets and Sherman Newsom serving as consulting and chief engineers. The nine year old equipment will be replaced to improve coverage and signal quality, reflecting a plan long in the works and prompted by recent failures.

Model Cleaners Triumphs in 1955 Little League Final

Model Cleaners defeated the Fort Davis Rebels 8 to 3 to clinch the 1955 Little League championship after sweeping both halves and avoiding a playoff. Joe Hord Jr. and his Fort Worth family arrived to visit his ill father.
