The paper urges support for Louis Starns as Democratic Precinct 1W chairman next Saturday. The editorial notes election fatigue and urges good men to aid their party. A separate brief reports four year old Oliver Theophilus broke his arm after falling from a burro but is recovering.
Southern Pacific unveils five new Sunset Limited streamliners for the New Orleans to Los Angeles run with a 42 hour schedule starting August 20. Eastbound No 2 Sunset Limited arrives Alpine 8 46 PM. westbound No 1 arrives 7 42 PM. Trains feature stainless steel cars, private rooms, Sleepy Hollow seats, French Quarter lounge, Audubon dining, and Pride of fake? equipment.
Seven indictments were returned by the grand jury summoned for the August term of district court. Indicted: Ivey Ellis burglary, Eulalio Rodriguez theft, Carlos Molinar theft, Myron W. Schmidt burglary, Jesus Anaya assault with intent to murder. Arrests not yet made in other cases, including Martin Ramos for the death of Juan Salgado and the ranch shooting of Ramon Gonzales in western Brewster County. A petit jury was summoned for next Monday at 10 o'clock to report and hear the criminal docket.
The Singer sewing center at 115 W Holland opens today at 10 am under district manager C L Williams with H V Scott as local manager arriving from Laredo. Assisting are Mrs Scott and three children, plus G C McDaniel as trainee sales rep, Mrs Joe Pardoll as sewing instructress, and Mrs FP Reeder and Mrs Sam Childers as saleswomen. The modern center features a sewing room and project boards, with classes offered including beginner to sew and refresher courses, and customers with Singer purchases may join the dress making course. Miss Mary Ann Thompson and L A Duke assist in the opening along with the center’s rose color scheme and standard shop setup.
The 1100 worshippers at Bloys Camp heard Dr S L Joekel of Austin lead prayer and hymnody. Dr Walter Kerr of Kerrville preached, with Dr L D Anderson of Fort Worth delivering the opening sermon. Three daily services run through August 2, with Bible classes by Joekel and noonday meals for campers.
The Texas city of Alpine declares Monday and Tuesday August 21 and 22 as sanitation clean-up days to curb unsanitary conditions and prevent epidemics. Mayor John W. Gillett urges all citizens to cooperate while the city supplies spraying ingredients for use on all property within Alpine. City Secretary John Stovell attests.
Organized search for Martin Ramos, 23 year old Mexican wounding Salgado's Ramon Gonzales, aided by Border Patrol and others. Ramos claimed rifle used. Gonzales wounded and Salgado killed. Police continued investigation with details on motives and later events. Alpine Cowboys defeated Weimar Herder Truckers 17-10 and 17-16 in semi pro playoff play, with Mulligan, Shamblin, and Newton among top hitters.
Border authorities probe a shooting in a border area after officers encountered three young men who claimed to be residents. One man sustained injuries and was hospitalized after a fall. Police found a fake pistol and rifles, while two suspects fled the scene. officers issued pickup orders for the two involved.
Sul Ross College prepares for its 30th commencement with the largest graduating class. August 24 confers 205 degrees led by Dr. RM Hawkins president. 62 masters and 143 bachelors. Bishop Clinton 8. Quin will deliver the baccalaureate sermon August 2 at 8 p.m. Invocation by Rev Glenn F. Bales. benediction by Rev Joseph Santiago. Summer college choir led by Glenn Davis performs Holy Art Thou and Gloria. Dr Matt L. Ellis of Hendrix College will address graduates Thursday at 11 a.m.
Paisano session closed with record attendance and 17 700 meals served over seven days. H L Kokernot Jr reports meals up from 16 100 last year as visitors from Texas and other states attended. Elected officers include T C Mitchell president and Paul Keith secretary. Two hitchhikers, Alvis Loudermilk and Ed Smith, were released after pickup by Sheriff Jim Skinner.
The city widens Holland Avenue in the hotel block by moving the curb two and a half feet to align with balcony pillars. State Highway Dept guidance prompted the work to improve traffic flow on the route of U S Highways 67 and 90 through the area.
Extensive repairs and renovations of the city office are nearing completion with walls replastered and the interior redecorated after work began several days ago. Mr and Mrs Fred Olson left for a visit with relatives in San Antonio.
Sondra Breshears daughter of Mr and Mrs F Breshears was seriously injured Wednesday morning when the horse she rode stumbled and fell throwing her off her head striking a post. She is reported to have a slight concussion and the extent of her injuries was not yet known yesterday afternoon. Mrs Billy Ward and family are in San Antonio.
The Big Bend shot picture High Lonesome will premiere at the Granada on August 25 and 26 with stars including Barrymore and Alpine-area locals in lead roles. Advance tickets are on sale as a large local turnout is expected. Highway 118 paving south of Alpine was completed to 40 miles south, with bridges not yet finished and further work planned. a Presidio County bid for a six and a half mile stretch east to Alamita Creek was awarded at $67,000.
The city will spray for two days to curb a fly menace worsened by mild winter and wet early summer. A committee of Hank Finger Billy Ward and Wally Davis will arrange plans. At a chamber of commerce city commission meeting, residents were urged to cooperate to eliminate breeding places including vacant lots alleys and outdoor toilets. The county will supply DDT the city benzine and water to conduct Operation Fly with 10 to 18 spraying units actively treating sites.
Funeral services were held in Fabons for D. C. Clay Roberts 71 a retired customs officer whose body was found slumped in his car with a bullet wound eight miles north of El Paso last Saturday A longtime Big Bend area officer Roberts lived with daughter Mildred Corning in El Paso He earlier served as deputy sheriff at Marathon and was brother to J J HL Punch Roberts and D M Odes Roberts of Marathon Also related are Jim Roberts of Del Rio and Jack Stone family members note a San Antonio visit by Mr and Mrs Stone earlier this week
Marfa businessmen plan two bus tours Aug 23 and Aug 25 to promote the Marfa rodeo set for Sept 2–4. Stops include Valen tine, Van Horn, Kent, Toyah, Pecos lunch, Fort Stockton, Balmorhea, Fort Davis. then Alpine Marathon and Sanderson. Public address at each stop will tout Labor Day weekend events organized by Presidio County. A county reunion, square dance festival and barbecue by the Lions Club precede the rodeo.
