Cowboys Win First Game In National Tournament Play
The Alpine Cowboys semi pro champs opened the 1950 national tournament in Wichita with a 10 2 victory over East Hartford Propellers. Starter Swan struggled early, Murawski and Blanchard followed, while Cowboys pitchers Graves Mulligan and Shirley kept the Props hitless after the first, as Deveraux spread starts among three. The Cowboys led by seven runs after the first inning and will face Wyoming champions tomorrow night around 10 p.m. in the second round. Bennie Morgan of Amarillo visited Roscoe Morgan’s family.

Two Alpine men, Pfe. Marcelo Deanf and Pfe. Francisco Duran, join a third Alpine youth, sonso Natera Jr, as missing in action in Korea. All were last heard from on July 17 to 20. Duran enlisted in 1947 and was born Bronte. Cecil Estrada of Presidio also reported missing.

Anaya Acquitted In Assault Case
A district court jury acquitted Jesus Anaya on an assault with intent to kill charge after a trial that began Tuesday morning and concluded around 11 30 p m Wednesday. Anaya had been employed on a ranch in the Christmas mountains area after a shooting at the WP Hinson store near Study Butte. He pleaded self defense. Other docket items included Ivey Ellis burglary guilty plea three year suspended. A L Haynes DWI second offense guilty plea two year sentence paroled. Myron W Schmidt burglary guilty plea five year penitentiary term. Jurors were excused until next Monday for civil case.

Singer Sewing Center Opens To Large Local Turnout
Five hundred and forty three women registered over the two day armal opening of the new Singer Sewing Center last Friday and Saturday. District manager Mr. S J Williams and local manager Mr H V Scott praised the response. Many enrolled in sewing classes supervised by Mrs Joe Pardoll and service calls are pouring in. Prizes awarded to registrants included a vacuum cleaner, sewing cabinet, iron, and buttonhole patcher.

Rig Move Advances Water Test at Alpine Oil Site
A water test rig was moved to a former abandoned oil hole seven miles south of Alpine at McIntyre Decker ranch. The Charlie Watson rig was set up midweek after grading delays. Preliminary logs showed standing water at top, mud at 140 feet, with a test drilled to about 1400 feet before abandonment several years ago. The water flow proved strong and shutoff failed, ending the effort. Severe drought continues in Alpine with scant rainfall since August and new local showers confined to the Bend-Davis mountains area.

Citywide spray units combat Alpine clean up drive
Alpine launched a cooperative clean up using about a dozen spray units operated by local business leaders. Starting downtown, units sprayed flies and pests from alleys to open lots, damp places, and open toilets. The effort, sponsored by the city and Alpine chamber of commerce, also targets weed control and sewer expansion to end open toilets amid enforcement challenges.
