The Alpine Public Library dedication last Friday drew attention as the chamber of commerce and American Legion hosted a well planned open house. Reports note increased capacity use and publicity, with plans for new linotype machinery to speed up local printing and serve the community.
The August term of district court will convene here next Monday with a brief session planned. Civil cases await disposition, no petit jury called yet, and one criminal case may be tried. Grand jurors summoned for 10 am Monday include S. L. Stumberg, Guy S. Combs Jr., Chas. Uranga, Otis Kimball, Cavin Woodward, Vernon McIntyre, J. M. Floyd, Alonzo Hord, David Kokernot, Z. P. Decie, Ralph Gray, B. F. Beckett, A. M. Queen, W. G. Fielder, M. C. Kay.
The Alpine girls known as the Happy Hitters beat Matt Blackwell 8 to 7 in an exciting game last Saturday. They will face the Sheffield girls at Jaycee softball field this coming Saturday night, aiming for another victory after their prior win over Sheffield.
City offices report building permits issued for June and July totaled 39500, not including a separate million-dollar Sul Ross College program. Readable entries list numerous small residential additions and new houses with varied costs from 200 to 4000 dollars, plus a brick-veneer nursery school project at N Std St for 2000.
About 50 Masons attended a supper Thursday evening followed by a lodge meeting. Dr. Joel Wright spoke on Masonry’s history and influence in world affairs while members and visitors toured the building and learned of an ambitious remodeling program planned soon.
The Board of Regents will hold its August meeting at Sul Ross State College on August 10 11 and 12. Regents include Newton Harrell Claude president Walter F. Woodul and others. Sul Ross subcommittee chaired by Mrs J K Beretta with Senator Collins and H L Mills. Dr R M Hawkins is Sul Ross president. Six colleges in group are Sam Houston East Texas Stephen F Austin Southwest and more with presidents named.
Sul Ross college expands its athletic program as a 30000 dollar football field and stadium upgrade progresses to be ready for the first home game. Sul Ross joins Lone Star Intercollegiate Athletics, facing tougher competition than in the New Mexico conference where they won championships. Only 12 lettermen and 18 new players form a 24 man squad as June graduation reduced the prior roster.
A second Linotype has been added to The Avalanche facilities and will be used for the next issue. The plant previously had one all purpose machine lacking sufficient handling capacity. The new machine will handle straight matter for newspaper work while the first Linotype serves display, ads, and commercial type. The upgrade aims to speed type setting and increase output, weather permitting enough operators remain available.
Brewster County residents consider a $100000 bond issue to fund lake and park improvements. Citizens heard a donation proposal from David Combs and plan a non profit operation with a county land grant of up to 100 acres. A petition drive seeks an election within 45 to 30 days.
The Alpine Promenaders raised 178 dollars at their second benefit dance for the Alpine high school band. Proceeds support uniforms with delivery planned Sept 14. Guests came from eight West Texas towns as calls were led by Hugnauxin and others. band director Van Fossan and president John Newell praised the effort and planned a third dance.
The Brewster Jett Davis Presidio and Terrell counties Selective Service board ordered forty eight more men to report for examinations for induction into the armed forces. This brings the month’s total to sixty with twelve men previously called. Examinations were to be held in El Paso yesterday and on August 17 and 30. Names of drafted men will not be announced until they are accepted.
The semi pro baseball classic will be played here tomorrow and Sunday between the Weimar Truckers and the Alpine Cowboys for state crown and the right to go to Wichita Kas. The two games open a five game series with three wins needed. Both teams boast top college talent including Texas University stars and Baylor Texas players as recent additions.
The Paisano Baptist encampment opens Monday in a new $65,000 tabernacle used this summer. Rey M. Turner of Pecos, encampment exec vice-president, estimates about 1200 people were on the grounds on opening day with more expected. Sunday is projected as the peak attendance day.
Alpine is confirmed as a scheduled stop on the Southern Pacific Sunset Limited, with eastbound Train No. 2 arriving at 8 46 p m and westbound Train No. 1 at 7 42 p m. The train will meet west of Alpine at Marfa, Del Rio listed as a flag stop. The initial run is set for Sunday, Aug 20, with only two scheduled stops between San Antonio.
A white stucco library on North 7th Street in Alpine was officially dedicated last Friday in a ceremony led by the Alpine chamber of commerce. About 19 local groups joined El Progreso in accepting a $3,000 Build Better Community prize from Kroger Co. Mrs. Henry Virgini Bailey received the check from Mrs. J. Howard Hodge of Midland, president of the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs. Rev. Austin H. Dillon conducted the ceremony after Mrs. Bonnie Newell fell ill. Dr. H. W. Morelock and the Alpine Friends of the Library spoke on the project’s significance, and ribbon cutting linked the old brick building to the new library.
Brewster county announces run off election for August 26 with four precinct offices. Committeeman Prec 3 Marathon and Prec 1 East and West Alpine plus Prec 3 Marathon constable and Prec 5 Park committeeman. Write in for Prec 5. ballots delayed awaiting state committee guidance. Balloting at usual county voting places.
