Horned toads travel from Alpine to Alberta zoo
A family from Alpine drove 11 horned toads to the University of Alberta at Calgary and Calgary Zoo. At the Canadian border a customs officer reacted dramatically to their unusual cargo as the Kays awaited inspection. The journey included a layover in San Francisco and Los Angeles on the return trip.

Trio Attend WICC Meet in Big Spring

Big Bend Telephone Co officials announced a 2 million dollar rural system for six West Texas counties Brewster Presidio Jeff Davis Pecos Terrell and Val Verde covering about 20000 square miles. A 2 million REA loan is expected mid September to fund about 2300 miles of line including 1300 on existing poles and 1000 new miles with exchanges at Heath Canyon Alpine Marfa Marathon Fort Stockton Sanderson and Langtry. About 300 potential customers are in the service area and rates aim to stay low while connections link with Southwestern Bell lines.

Summer convocation set at Sul Ross College Auditorium
Summer commencement exercises will be held in the Sul Ross College Auditorium at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18. The address will be given by Clayton Heare of Amarillo, chairman of the Sul Ross Local Committee. Heare is a 1922 law graduate who later served as judge on the Court of Civil Appeals at Amarillo. Fannie Lorena Craft, 58, died early Saturday at her Alpine home. She and husband Jesse moved from Liberty Missouri in 1951 and married in Independence in 1926. Survivors: husband, two sons J L Craft Jr of Lafayette NY and Floyd Joseph Craft of Long Beach CA, seven grandchildren. Services 3 p.m. Tuesday at Geeslin Funeral Chapel. Ship to Collinsville Cemetery near Tulsa for burial.
