University approves 400000 building plan for McDonald Observatory
University of Texas Board of Regents okayed a 400000 improvement program for McDonald Observatory at Fort Davis to upgrade equipment and boost its global ranking. Dr. Norman Hackerman said the facility, currently among the world’s top 12, will see shared research with the University of Chicago and expansion of astronomy studies to graduate 25 PhDs annually.

Mrs Owens Appointed Alpine High School Librarian
The Alpine School Board approved Mrs Nan Owens as librarian for Alpine High School at the regular meeting Tuesday. Board members reviewed school facilities and praised custodial staff for the well kept buildings and grounds. The board also authorized selecting a school auditor for the 1963 64 year.

M. T. Bidal becomes pharmacist at the new Service Drugs in the HIN Building with owner Clayton Franks announcing the store is open. Three Die in One-Car Crash West of Sanderson
Three men died in a Sunday 3 a.m. crash eight miles west of Sanderson on U S Highway 90. Roman Frank Dott Jr. 20 of Panther Junction Big Bend National Park Carl Thomas Smith 20 of Marathon and Jose Pena 38 of Sanderson were riding to Sanderson from Marathon Pena a ranch worker. Their car hit a bridge abutment and all died instantly. Double funeral services for Smith and Dott were held Tuesday at Marathon Baptist Church with burial in Marathon Cemetery. Smith born December 8 1942 in Marfa survived by his parents three sisters and one brother various Marathon relatives and Marathon grandparents. Dott born September 5 1942 in Fort Stockton also survived by family members.

Alpine Fire Insurance Key Rate Cut to 41 Cents
Fire Chief J C Cooley announced a rate drop from 48 to 41 cents per hundred dollars of coverage after a 7 percent reduction approved by the State Board of Insurance in Austin. The change, offset by 4 cents credits from a 45 cent base, could save about 3500 dollars on premiums if last year's rate applies. Maine volunteers Gordon Barrow and Bud Powers, who completed a training school at College Station, aided in the reduction by 4 points.

New six month data from the University of Texas Bureau of Business Research shows 1963 activity surging past last year with a projected county and Alpine city record. Brewster County Memorial Hospital addition and Cathedral Mountain Lake projects hint at total building permits over a million dollars, with National Park concessions lodge and road work to Castelon and Santa Elena Canyon under way.
