Famed Bloys Camp Meeting Set to Open Next Tuesday

The sixtieth annual Bloys Camp Meeting Assn session will run from next Tuesday through Aug 24 at Skillman Grove near Fort Davis. Four preachers will again lead services: Dr L D Anderson Dr Samuel L Joekel Dr W R White and Dr Leland Clegg.

Missing S R Student Found Dead in El Paso

L. M. Stone, 23, war veteran and Sun Ross summer student, was missing from Robstown since Tuesday morning and found dead in an El Paso tourist court Wednesday. He left his apartment with his bride of two to three months for college and was not heard from again until discovery. His parents arrived from Robstown after notification. Stone survived the war with an arm lost in a tractor accident prior to discharge.

District Court Convenes Monday for August Term

Jurors are summoned as the August term of district court opens next Monday with grand jurors reporting at 10 a m and petit jurors the following day. A docket of criminal and other cases is planned. Names listed include grand jurors Zoye Decie and C F Cox and petit jurors A W Fulcher and Manuel Aguilar.

Cowboys Shellac Lama Team in Big Sunday Win

The Alpine Cowboys pummeled Tony Lama ace Castorena, belting seven hits in two innings to score eight runs and chase him from the mound. Baird hit a homer and a trio of three baggers fueled the rally as Duncan, Nutt, Jordan and Peden contributed key hits. Castorena, named on last year's Southwestern all star team, struggled before Arroyo relieved.

Courtesy Clinic Set For Aug 18th

Alpine welcomes Bill N. Newman from the University of Texas Extension Service and the Texas State Board for Vocational Education to plan a three‑day tourist courtesy course. The six hour program runs over three days with two 2 hour sessions daily and a 50 cent registration fee. Participants include workers in service stations cafes hotels tourist courts and transportation firms.

Local Businessman E. R. Cox Dies of Heart Attack

E R Cox aged 66 died of a heart attack while serving as a witness at a courthouse trial Tuesday morning. A Kentucky native, he lived in Alpine since 1929 after work with Pecos Valley Southern and Orient railroad projects. Survived by widow Oma Doole, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral at Baptist church with Dr Dutton officiating. Interment Elm Grove cemetery.

Water Supply Signs Erected On Highways This Week

Alpine city announces that state health department approval for the water supply has been obtained. Signs informing travelers of the approved water source will go up this week along US 96 67 east and west of town and on Highway 118 Fort Davis road.

Ballots Ready This Week for RunOff Primary Aug 28

Dr J E Wright chairman of the county Democratic executive committee said ballots for the run-off primary on August 28 will be printed this week after delay for a certified candidates list from state headquarters. The only local race of interest is state senator 29th district with Hill D Hudson of Pecos and Henry Coffield of Marfa as candidates.

Paving Program Aims After Big Bend Soil District Formed

At its first official meeting on August 5 in Alpine the Big Bend Soil Conservation district elected David Combs as chairman James Pate as vice chair and Joe Parker as secretary. The district plans a Program and Plan of Work to survey conditions and guide future actions with advisory support from Texas State Soil Conservation officials.

City Commission Explains Tax Spending And Debt

The city commission hires Thomas M. French Jr. as delinquent tax attorney and outlines how tax money is spent. They publish a 1947-48 budget, explain a bonded debt of about 277000, and note 54 percent of each tax dollar goes to debt service while 46 percent funds operations. Water works and garbage collections cover their own costs, with improvements to Fort Davis highway flood control and streets remaining primary outlays.

Alpine Plans Expanded Paving With New Contracts

City contracts sign three paving blocks in Alpine with more petitions filed for blocks on North Walker North Ave B and North Cockrell. First block on North Walker connects East Ave C with College Avenue amid ongoing campaign to pave at least 20 more blocks beyond the Fort Davis highway project. Alpine reports over 100 blocks of curb to curb paving already completed and expects additional blocks this season.

Booster Club Meet Set For Monday Night

Sul Ross Booster club directors and interested parties plan a meeting Monday at City Hall at 8 o clock. President F L McCollum announced that plans for the football season and other business will be discussed. A good attendance is urged.

Browns and Cubs to Play Exhibition in Alpine

The St. Louis Browns and Chicago Cubs will likely meet in an exhibition at Kokernot field in Alpine next spring. Sponsor H. L. Kokernot Jr. confirmed the plan, with dates not yet definite. Further details will be published in The Avalanche.

Funeral Services Held Saturday For Mrs. Foster

Funeral services for Mrs. J.
