Alpine Cowboys defeated the Fort Bliss Falcons 5-3 at Dudley Field to win the Southwestern Semi Pro tournament. Ray McNeill indicated a possible playoff path against Elroy Arizona state champions before facing Idaho Utah champions en route to Wichita nationals. Pitcher Thornton was injured covering home. Lefty Miller relieved.
The Texas Highway Department invites bids to extend State Highway 118 from Scenic Loop road near Fort Davis to U S 80 at Kent. The 22 899 mile section will create a paved link south from U S 80 through the Davis Mountains to Alpine and Big Bend National Park. Bids open in Austin August 25 at 9 am.
Draft board members for the area were announced as recommended to President Truman by Gov Beauford Jester. The panel includes J C Epperson and J M Alderson of Alpine, C E Eaton of Fort Davis, F W Barton of Marfa, and F M Weigand of Sanderson in Brewster Jeff Davis Presidio and Terrell counties. The state will have 136 local draft boards.
The sale of Wilson Hardware and Supply Co. stock to Storey White Side Lumber Co. was announced Wednesday and takes effect immediately. Owner W. A. Wilson Jr. will continue to operate his feed business while the hardware and supply business stays at its present location temporarily per R. A. Whiteside of Storey White Side Lumber Co.
Rain totals and damage from last Friday and Saturday hit Alpine and surrounding areas. Sul Ross gauge shows 1.29 inches in Alpine, boosting July to 3.01 inches. Vernon McIntyre ranch recorded 4.75 inches nearby. Water covered highways and damaged S P roadbed delaying traffic. streets along the railroad suffered significant flooding. a water pipe broke and yards in the north part of town stood in inches of water. Much of the county remains dry despite scattered local rains in the past week.
Building permits issued at the city office in the past month total about 25 000 dollars, not counting several new business and residence projects already under construction. Eighty five Rossonians will receive degrees at Sul Ross College's August 19 commencement. Thirty one Master of Arts, five Bachelor of Arts, eleven Bachelor of Business Administration, and 38 Bachelor of Science degrees. Two programs feature Rev. Stewart Hartfelter and Charlie Guy with college choir performances in Sul Ross auditorium.
The Alpine Cowboys host the Tony Lama Cowboys of El Paso for two games this weekend starting at 3 p.m. The El Paso squad, strong in the Southwestern tournament, will be bolstered by players from other tourney teams. Castdrena, the left handed ace, may oppose Alpine in one game.
Brewster County records show twenty three new motor vehicles registered last month, eight more than June and nine more than May. Registered owners include L A Teplicek Alpine Kaiser sedan Watson Anderson Co Alpine Plymouth sedan J S Davis Alpine International truck and several others across Alpine Fort Davis Marathon and De Soto used various makes and models.
Rev Buford Isaacs pastor of First Christian church of Cleburne and former pastor of the local Christian church will give the morning sermon at the Christian church here Sunday. He is well known in Alpine and invites friends to greet him. Mrs June Weyerts will sing The Holy City at morning worship. The public is invited.
James Thomas eight and his brother Raymond twelve were playing with a .22 rifle when a gun discharged last Sunday afternoon. James was struck in the mouth and cheek and the bullet lodged near his temple. He is said to be making satisfactory recovery.
Mrs. Philip Newsom of Alpine undergoes treatment. Mrs. S J Dempsey of Marfa undergoes major operation. Mrs. Homer Rackley of Alpine receives treatment. Ted Clayton Henderson of Marathon receives treatment. Manuel Moreno of Apine receives treatment. Mrs. Catherine Redler of Alpine listed for care.
Lee Cowell from the Alpine FFA chapter presented Conservation for Security about sub surface water decline and soil erosion. He cited a Fort Stockton rancher who increased output by stock reduction and a New Mexico experiment confirming profitability. Emmett Tiner and Cowell showed the film Muddy Waters on erosion and water storage.
Members of the Men’s Fellowship club are reminded of the dinner meeting to be held next Tuesday at the Presbyterian church at 7 p m A good attendance is urged.
Among former Alpine residents at the Paisano encampment last week were Martha Ezell of Stamford and daughter Clinton Carroll of Crane, Ezra Cook and daughter Alice of San Angelo, Ezra Glenn Cook and two children of Brady, Doyle Perdue and family of Ozona, A. J. Tippit of Albany, Howard Johnson and two children of El Paso, and Ben Williams and family of Ozona.
Sebastian Juarez 50 died at his South Alpine home after an extended illness. Born in Presidio he lived in Alpine 20 years. Survived by his widow and four children. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church Monday afternoon with interment in the local cemetery.
A benefit dance for the Alpine Volunteer Fire department is set for tomorrow at the Turf club. The Sul Ross orchestra will perform and admission is $L per person. Tickets are on sale in downtown stores and Alpine residents are urged to buy tickets to aid the firemen's fund.
Dr and Mrs W H Stover welcome a girl born in August weighing 8 pounds 4 ounces. Mr and Mrs Woodrow Mills of Valentine announce a boy named Charles Lawrence born August 2 weighing 9 pounds.
A short school for water works employees and plumbers in the area will begin Monday August 16 at 7 30 p m at City Hall. The course, run by the State Health Department, will meet three nights a week for three weeks. Water works staff and interested locals are invited to attend.
Paisano Baptist encampment officials hailed another record year with about 1,000 campers, up 450 to 500 from last summer, and 17 500 meals served. Dr Robi G Lee preached to 2 000 Friday night and another large crowd Saturday, despite a heavy rain. About $35 000 was pledged for annual expenses and future improvements including a new tabernacle costing about $50 000.
News reached Alpine of the sudden death of Mrs. L. B. Boudreaux formerly Miss Lucille Rives. She lived in Alpine for years with her uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Yates, former editor of The Avalanche. She attended the El Campo funeral Sunday with relatives Mrs. Yates now of Marfa and Mrs. Boudreaux of Alpine.
