Scattered Showers Break Monthlong Dry Spell in Alpine Area
The Alpine region recorded its first moisture of consequence since January 7 as intermittent showers dropped about .58 inches over a five to ten mile radius. Fort Davis reported a cool rain while nearby areas felt the moisture. Week temperatures ranged from 92 to 61 with Tuesday’s high at 82 and Wednesday’s near 61.

Grand jurors have been summoned for the August term of District court which convenes here next Monday. Petit jurors will be summoned after court convenes. Former Resident Dies in Marfa After Illness
Vonn Cummings, about 55, a former Al sine resident, died at Marfa Sunday morning. Body was brought here Tuesday by a Livingston funeral coach for shipment to Houston for burial. He had worked at Matthews Cleaners and lived in Marfa for several months. M. Swann visits sister Mrs. A J Joyce this week and recovers from illness. Swann, a former Ava anchor employee, now with the San Angelo Standard Times, plans to work on a weekly newspaper in Artesia New Mexico next week.

Paisano Assembly Approves 1945-46 Improvement Program
Paisano Baptist encampment completes its session with an ambitious plan worth about 50000 for 1945-46. The program covers rebuilt electric distribution, new poles and wires, expanded lines, motors, a three inch main from the reservoir to grounds, 10 caching, and more. Over 14000 was subscribed toward the coming year, with churches pledging support. Plans also include dormitories, rest rooms, sewer extensions, a Truett Memorial auditorium, and enlarged dining sheds. The gathering reported 20 conversions, a $169 Sunday school collection for the San Antonio Mexican orphanage, and a successful Boys and Girls camp raising 810 toward next year’s program.

W. Koppins of Uvalde is named principal of Alpine High School by the school board to replace Hugh L. Waldrum. Robbins, a nine year Uvalde veteran and former Air Force Ground School instructor, holds a master's from Texas University and plans to move to Alpine with his wife and child after purchasing a home from Mrs. Edna H. The final of 15 state owned cottages were sold this week with buyers including Paul Vogt Cottage 12 for 82.22 and Joe W. Toombs Cottage 26 for si go131. Previous sales in July saw J L Keroy purchase cottages 9 and 14, Lizzie Riggs 10 for 1868.50, W M Meador 16 for 2308, and J J Kerby acquiring 21 22 and 24 for over $2000 each. A Sul Ross business office report notes 19 cottages sold to high bidders brought in about $38 thousand. Jenkins House on East College Ave bought by Dr H W Morelock brought $6.08. Proceeds will fund student housing on the Hill.

Mercury Majority From Terlingua Texas Big Bend District
University of Texas geologists report most of Texas mercury comes from the Terlingua region in Brewster and nearby Presidio counties. The ore is cinnabar and native mercury with secondary minerals, and production totals from 150 000 to 200 000 flasks of 10 pounds each. Mercury is used in drugs chemicals electrical apparatus ship coatings and gold and silver recovery.
