Paisano Encampment Ends Successful Meet
The 21st Paisano Baptist encampment closed eleven miles west of Alpine. Attendance rose with the largest camp, 128 towns and 11 states plus Chile represented. Dining sheds fed about 2000 daily weekdays, 800 in Sunday school, with $309.24 to Chinese relief and about $5000 raised for encampment expenses. Plans include 75 cabins on 1000 acres. New officers were elected and the 1942 session set for July 27 to August 5.

Convoy of Fort Bliss Troops Passes Through Alpine
Thru Here Wednesday more than 1000 motor vehicles carrying 9000 Fort Bliss troopers rolled through Alpine Wednesday morning bound for maneuvers in Louisiana. The 50 mile convoy moved along U S Highway 90 after overnight near Marfa, with the last units passing through after 1 pm. Traffic remained uninterrupted as trucks moved in small spaced groups, supervised by military police and local officers.

Bids on Davis Mountains road rejected by state commission
FORT DAVIS Aug 6 The state highway commission rejected all bids on the four mile unit of the Davis Mountains State parks highway as too high, with the lowest bid about 12000 over the engineering estimate. The commission will have the road built by state forces, and work is expected to start in early September. The remainder of the loop west of Fort Davis, about 23 miles toward the Kelly ranch, has been accepted for formal taking over to begin immediate repairs for the camp meeting next week. Six miles northward from Fort Davis to Birdapple orchards is to be finished by month end, with bridges nearly complete and caliche base laid. blacktop remains. Paving will extend to the Old Spanish Trail at Toyahvale and U.S. 80 at Pecos.

Dates set for a joint Texas State Parks board and Big Bend National Park association meeting August 11 to 13. Dr H W Morelock vice president of the association was advised by the parks board office in Austin last Saturday. The gathering will be at Alpine and Indian Lodge in the Davis mountains with board members stationed there. Monday will be an executive session, and Tuesday features a joint session with the association’s executive committee to adopt plans for creating an organization to acquire land in the park area. About 200000 acres of the 788000 proposed Big Bend land are already owned by the State Parks board. A campaign to launch land buying steps is planned.
