Legislature Must Fund Sul Ross Athletic Program

The Sul Ross College athletic staff remain unfinalized due to awaiting legislative funding. J H Sears and Regents reviewed the new science building, noted high quality, and discussed budgetary issues linked to state appropriations and a proposed student activity fee for non academic programs.

Gillett Named District Chairman of Independent Business Group

Joan W. Gillett appointed district chairman for a national Independent Business group. Bruce B. Shumate announced the position as district manager of the National Federation of Independent Business. Members vote monthly on bills affecting independent business and submit ballots to Congressman J. T. Rutherford, with copies to State Senator Dorsey Hardeman.

Miss Fort Worth to Visit Big Bend Region

Wally Davis of Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce has arranged for Miss Fort Worth to travel to Alpine and nearby Big Bend country after being selected. The Aug 2 contest at Casino Beach will name the winner who will then journey to Alpine via Trans-Texas and stay at several local lodgings over a planned two to three day visit.

Williams Assigned As State Patrolman in Alpine

Carl Williams, a Texas Highway Patrolman stationed in Van Horn for two years, has been reassigned to Alpine. Former Fabens resident, he moved to Van Horn in March 1957 after completing Patrol School. An avid photographer and Boy Scout leader of Troop 134, he attends the local Methodist Church and is an ex-Sul Ross student.

Charles E Speck Buried In Menard

Services for Charles E. Speck, longtime Alpine resident, were held in Menard on Tuesday. Speck, who moved to Sierra Blanca 12 years ago to ranch, is survived by his widow, two sons Charles E. Speck Jr of Sterling City and R C Buck of Santa Fe New Mexico, and two daughters Mrs J W Longenette of San Angelo and Mrs H E Randell of El Paso.

New Water Pipe Being Hauled Here

City officials announce the transport of three thousand treet of new 8 inch Transite pipe from a factory near Denison Texas to the Sunny Glen pipeline west of town. The pipe and surplus 150 pound pressure iron pipe will enable higher flow up to 1500 gallons per minute during peak demand. About 3700 feet of surplus pipe is installed in the north part, serving Bluebonnet and Carpenter Additions. A breakdown delayed work but parts were replaced and service restored. The system will use valves every two blocks with fire plugs and looped mains for continuous service. past week a West pump failure caused reduced production. officials favor newer submerged pumps. State Legion Heads Visit Big Bend Installation in Texas

Donald Peters of Houston as department commander attended the joint installation of officers for Big Bend Post and Unit No 79 of the American Legion and Auxiliary at the Legion Hall. Incoming Commander Henry Bailey urged members to serve community through Americanism and welfare programs. The event, attended by over 200, featured guests from Midland, Jessa, Sanderson, Van Horn and Eagle Pass, with District Commander Monte Goode and Auxiliary President Mrs Carl L Fleck Jr among the attendees.

Cowboys autograph night at Kokernot Field allows fans to meet players during a 15 minute window from 7:40 to 7:55 pm ahead of Alpine versus Plainview. Verdis Pack, formerly of Roswell, N. M., becomes the new manager of the Safeway Store in Alpine, succeeding Bill Heller who moved to Midian. Pack, with 11 years at Safeway, previously managed a Roswell store before relocating to Alpine. The story notes sharp Sophomore League stats and Cowboy baseball details, including attendance at Kokernot Field and leading players in hitting and fielding.

Baylor President Elected Leader of Paisano Encampment

Dr. W. R. White, president of Baylor University, was elected to succeed the longtime leader of the Paisano Baptist Encampment near Alpine as the encampment closed its six day session. Officials reported an average 2,500 meals served daily and about $18,000 subscribed toward next year’s operations, with total annual needs estimated at $20,000.

Ross State College Coach Hiring Tied To Church-Supported Colleges

Officials from Ross State College indicated a forthcoming football coach will likely come from one of Texas's small church-supported colleges. They noted all such schools produce scrappy teams and that the top coaching candidate from Andrew School recently withdrew, seeking full-time status with a larger program.

Alpine School System Faculty Member Accepts Sanderson High Post

Mrs Smith, a member of the Alpine School System faculty, has accepted a teaching position at Sanderson High. Mr and Mrs Smith plan to move to Sanderson after August 15. Mrs Selvig returned from a six week visit with relatives in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Geneva Selvig of Peterson, Minnesota, will visit here for two to three weeks.

Alpine observes Labor Day holiday on September 7

Members of the Metall Merchants Committee of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce voted to observe Labor Day on Monday September 7 as a legal holiday. Committee chairman Paul Forchheimer reported to the board of directors. All businesses able to do so are urged to observe the holiday.
