Henry Mardis Struck and Killed by Car on 7th Street
Henry Mardis died after being struck by a westbound car driven by 16 year old Woodrow Wilson Davis on Saturday night at the 7th Street and U S Highway 99 intersection in heavy rain. Mardis had used crutches since a prior crash at the same crossing a year earlier. Davis, son of Mrs Totsy Nell Hitchcock, was treated for shock at Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Texas Ranger Arthur Hill and Chief of Police Jack Johnson investigated. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Livingston Funeral Home. Mardis had no known relatives.

Pee Brumley asked all boys interested in varsity football to report for practice at 8 am Monday Aug. 15 in the high school gym. Over 40 boys pre-registered with Principal James Crawford, with nearly 50 expected to try out. Workouts run early mornings and late afternoons until school starts. Commissioners order delinquent tax records system
The commissioners court directed the tax assessor collector to set up books to bring forward each year’s delinquent tax balances and mail statements with current tax notices. If needed, staff may assist to implement the new system. The motion by Commissioner Gene Hendryx was seconded by Commissioner Regney Jr and passed unanimously. The court also set Monday the 15th for a hearing on the 1961 budget and invited objections.
