Paisano Encampment Ends Another Successful Session
Paisano Baptist encampment concluded a record week despite dreary weather with the evening service last Sunday. Plans for the 1955 session were set to run July end through the first Sunday. The 1800-seat tabernacle almost filled at each service, about 1600 attended the Sunday morning service, 1300 meals served at noon, and 857 in Sunday school as the $448 collection went to Sul Ross College Baptist Student Center. About $20,000 was raised to support next year’s encampment program. An unusual number came forward for dedication or conversion during worship. Officers were elected.

Mrs. J. B. Speer Former Alpine Resident Dies in Edinburg
Mrs. J B Speer age 56 died last Thursday in an Edinburg hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church in Edinburg with burial at McAllen. Surviving are her husband a son Lt James B Speer Jr Fort Hood two daughters Mrs Leslie M Linnard Pharr and Mrs James V Reeves Wichita Falls three brothers S J Lovell Kermit H L Lovell Sul Ross College graduate and W E Lovell Fort Worth two sisters Mrs Alan Boling and Mrs Oran Beechley Fort Worth and five grandchildren.

Alpine schools announce a Summer Band School for beginning and intermediate students at the high school band hall. Registration Monday Aug 9 at 9 am. A three week program runs Aug 9 to 27 with a $10 fee including instruction and books.

Buffalo Barbecue Dinner Set for August Fifteenth
The Big Bend Sportsmen's Club will host a buffalo barbecue at Kokernot lodge on Sunday August 15 to benefit the local youth program. The 1600-pound buffalo was donated by Reynolds brothers of the X ranch on the Davis Mountains scenic loop road. Events begin at 2 30 p m with demonstrations by Border Patrol chief George Harrison, exhibition muzzle-loading gun shooting by Tommy Henderson, and a Remington Arms demonstration by Jack Garrett. The barbecue is at Kokernot lodge with the meal at 4 p m.

Early-Day Park Boosters Honored In West Texas Ceremony
Honorary commissions as national park rangers were presented on wood-burned doeskin scrolls to Amon Carter of Fort Worth and three regional leaders. Dr. Horace W. Morelock and Benjamin Franklin Berkeley of Alpine received awards, with remarks calling Captain E. E. Townsend the park's father. A posthumous honor went to Townsend. Carter accepted in absentia. A barbecue followed, then a regional meeting to form a West Texas committee to fundraise for Big Bend National Park.

Patterson Selected for Demo Nominee in Texas Judicial Race
Gov Allan Shivers announced Patterson to fill the unexpired term of the late J C Epperson and named him the Democratic nominee for judge of the 83rd Judicial District in the November election. The six county Democratic chairmen voted 4 to 2 for Patterson amid two other applicants W A Hadden of Fort Stockton and John Menefee of McCamey. Fort Davis begins construction of a $20,000 clinic by Dr. Don A. Gaddis. R D McCready is the builder on land donated by J K Miller. Charles Neuhardt of Midland designed a concrete tile, air conditioned 2500 square foot facility with two inpatient rooms an operating room X ray lab three exam rooms a doctor’s office and reception. The water well on site yields 90 gallons per minute. Dr Gaddis and wife and child moved from Stanton June 2 to settle here. Occupancy hoped by October 1.

Court hears dispute over Pacific 4 commissioner race results

Brewster county Democrats praised Gov. Allan Shivers administration on tidelands policy in a pair of resolutions at the county Democratic committee meeting held last Saturday. The convention commended county chairmen of the 83rd Judicial district for selecting C. E. Patterson of Alpine as district judge nominee for November. Bruce C. Sutton of Alpine was named county attorney nominee. Patterson would be interim holder pending a commissioners court decision.
