One hundred two degrees will be awarded at the Sul Ross summer commencement in the college auditorium next Thursday at 7 30 PM. The speaker had not been announced by press time. The public is invited to attend the program.
Principal James Crawford announced Alpine high school registration for 1954 55 with seniors Aug 19 20 juniors Aug 23 24 sophomores and freshmen Aug 25 26 27 and stragglers Aug 30 all in room 12 from 9 to noon and 1 to 5. Mrs E A Chaffin returned from Temple and Oklahoma City with daughter Mrs B C Graves and her grandson after a six weeks visit.
Indications point to a big turnout at the Buffalo barbecue dinner and events sponsored by the Big Bend Sportsmen's Club. The barbecue will be served at Kokernot Lodge Sunday evening after marksmanship exhibitions and range events starting at 2 30 p m west of Alpine. Tickets are 1 for adults and 50 cents for children eight and under, with proceeds benefiting the club youth program.
Judge Jim C Langdon ruled Rex Ivey Jr. the Democratic nominee for commissioner Prec. 4 in Brewster County after a July 24 primary tie with W G Gulihur. The decision cited ineligible write in voters for Gulihur and set Aug 28 runoff ballot printing. Absentee voting begins this week with one local runoff between Jimmy Pate and incumbent Lee M Smith for Prec 2.
The Granada theatre, after announcing plans in April, is installing and testing Cinemascope equipment. Fred M. Jack reports delivery complete with two sets of four lenses from Bell & Howell. The system requires a wide curved screen. Alpine residents will soon view Cinemascope, with bookings of major films imminent.
State Highway Engineer D C Greer announced the Pecos river bridge on US 90 between Del Rio and Langtry is ahead of schedule 80 percent of the Del Rio side approaches are done base and asphalt surface will start immediately normal traffic to be restored within three weeks Mrs C S Stewart and daughters Jean and Patty of Ysleta visit her parents and attend the 1934 Alpine High reunion this weekend
Fort Davis August 10 breakfast honored the directors of Western Insurance Co. of Fort Davis and marked the retirement of Robert C. Withers as secretary treasurer after 22 years. He helped organize the mutual aid insurance in 1926 and led it since. Withers, 84, spoke of stepping away from policy writing while noting his long career as a land surveyor.
Williams of Austin becomes secretary treasurer man ager after buying goodwill from Mr. Withers and moving his family here. At 24 he brings three years of mutual aid association work from Amarillo and a year and a half in Austin. A memorial plaque for Mr. Clark, with the company from its start until his October death, will be hung. The business serves a nine county area around Fort Davis. The association has paid out 257857 for death and accident claims and 111000 for policy sales office rent and supplies.
The city reports the second well drilled below the bridge near Kokernot lodge is slightly better in test than the first. Officials expect both wells to yield 75 to 85 gallons per minute about 100,000 gallons daily, aiding the city supply though not yet meeting peak demand. Pumps to the second well and city lines to begin tomorrow as underground gathering work continues under an engineer’s supervision.
The Big Bend Davis Mountains region received the best rainfall in months over the past ten days with 1.5 to 4 inches across several ranches including Terry 101 Joe Lane and Hillman Davis in Presidio County. Alpine and Fort Davis areas logged multiple showers raising totals for the week and month though overall local totals remain modest.
Bruce C. Sutton of Alpine was appointed Brewster county attorney to fill the unexpired term of C. E. Patterson, who was named to succeed the late Judge J. C. Epperson. Sutton, a Democratic nominee, has practiced law in the area and is a University of Houston law school graduate. Patterson was sworn in as district judge last weekend.
Rev. Robt. Davis named as rector of Episcopal churches in Alpine and Marfa and will begin duties after successor at Fort Stanton New Mexico is named. Mr. and Mrs. Davie will reside in Alpine. Davis has spent about twenty years in missionary work among the Navajo Indians.
Mrs. Rubye Halbert Peterson age 45 of Zwolla Louisiana a former Sul Ross college teacher and dean of women was killed in a car crash near St Augustine Florida last Saturday. Her 10 year old son Kenneth Charles was injured and her 19 year old son Ben the driver escaped serious injury. The family lived in Alpine for about three years and had been on a vacation trip when the collision occurred at a highway intersection according to a St Augustine newspaper.
Alpine Little League all stars defeated Marfa in the first benefit game at Marfa Tuesday night 10-8. The event, sponsored by civic clubs from both towns, aims to raise money for the emergency polio fund drive and drew receipts of 93 dollars. The series continues with planned games in Alpine and Marfa, plus another post season tilt between Alpine and Fort Davis.
Approximately 50 graduates from the Alpine High class of 1934 plan to attend a reunion here tomorrow and Sunday with 30 plus from out of town. Attendees include Drury Wood and Mrs Wood from Del Ro and D M Major and Mrs Major from Bowie. Open house is planned in the H E reception room 2 to 6 45 p m and a worship service dedicated to WWII casualties Raymond Newman and Boots Wright at Kokernot lodge 11 a m Sunday. If rain, service moves to Sul Ross auditorium. The class of 1935 may join the Holland hotel banquet and informal dance 7 to 9 p m tomorrow. Local exes in charge include Fritz Weyerts Paul Forchheimer Frank Matthews and Mesdames Burr Thornton Inda B Adams Ray Morrow.
The Internationals, riding a seven game win streak, defeated the Grandfalls Eagles 7 to 4 at Ramos field in Alpine. Duane Gooden limited Grandfalls to four hits while Tom Valadez hit his 11th homer and Johnny Sanchez allowed six hits. A doubleheader is set for Sunday with Presidio Cats and Marfa Pirates at 1:30 p.m.
The Plymouth Oil Company reports drilling at 6869 feet on the H. L. Kokernot and Son ranch, about 25 miles north of Alpine, tracing Permian sand formation. A MARATHON NEWS letter was mis sent or lost in the mail this week.
Alpine residents to witness Louie Mattar and his Fabulous Car in a non-stop 6391 mile endurance run from Anchorage, Alaska to Mexico City. The Cadillac and trailer, valued around 75000 dollars, will pass through here at 1101 p m Monday with three drivers in five hour shifts.
Plans are set to remodel the Singer Sewing Machine Co building at 115 West Holland Ave for Forchheimer's. Front three quarters become an annex to the department store while the rear houses storage and offices. A wall removal will unify the spaces, with birch fixtures matching new facilities. The 65th Bloys Camp Meeting Association session will run August 17 to 24 near Fort Davis. Rev. Julian T. Hendren leads the event with visiting ministers Dr Samuel L. Joekel and Dr L D Anderson. New cabins a youth tabernacle and upgraded electric power modernize the site while keeping its traditional atmosphere.
Alpine Cowboys lose 8 7 at Kokernot Field to Biggs AFB then win 10 0 the next day. Jim Hopkins homered for the Cowboys in Saturday action, while Jack Parker homered for Biggs. Parker pitched the full game Sunday as the Cowboys offense exploded late. The club plans matchups with Lubbock and Tri Service Drillers ahead of a Fort Bliss series and a season ending series for a trophy.
Tom Cross of Dallas spent last weekend visiting his mother Mrs. E. S. Cross who has been seriously ill for some time, along with other relatives.
The Lions Club sponsored final Alpine Little League game last Thursday night, Morrison's beating M-System Gulf Servicenter 5-1. Season standings show Mode! Cleaners 5-1, Morrison's 4-2, M-System Gulf Servicenter 3-3, Baker Jewelers 0-6. Lions Club thanks contributors for summer program for many boys.
