A cloudburst yesterday afternoon forced the cancellation of the Sul Ross Summer Theatre opening performance M Liss My Western Miss. The production schedule shifts show dates with Moon Is Blue and Time Out for Ginger slated for Friday and Saturday nights respectively. Cast lists are released for four plays in cooperation with Alpine Big Bend Area and Sul Ross State College, detailing actors from Alpine, Odessa, San Antonio, Fort Davis, Del Rio, Abilene and other locales.

Welcome Rains End Dry Spell Alpine Washes Rain

Alpine records 1.59 inches of rainfall in July, via The Avalanche gauge on College Hill. Rainfall in the west and north areas exceeded this amount. The monthly total lifts the year to 5.14 inches, below 1965’s 7.65 inches and July 1965’s 2.02 inches. Economic Survey Underway In Alpine Project Study
A Bureau of Business Research representative from the University of Texas arrived in Alpine to conduct a 60 to 90 day economic survey. Robert B. Bond Talks Set for Next Week with City Council
Fiscal agents R A Underwood Jr and Jack Morris will meet City Council members next week to discuss proposed bond issues. The council voted to submit 200000 for water system improvements, 105000 for sewer work, and 4500 for a municipal swimming pool as revenue and tax bonds. Mayor W E Lockhart assures no tax or rate increase if approved and notes plans to retire 35000 of existing revenue bonds to improve borrowing terms.

Alpine TV Franchise Renewed by City Council
Alpine TV Cable won a 10 year renewal after a Tuesday meeting. The city will take 2 percent of gross revenue or $1 per subscriber, whichever is greater, and the firm lists 889 subscribers. Plans include a $30,000 upgrade to transistor amplifiers and a new 5 hp Red Jacket pump to replace the Miles well pump at $400 to $500. The council approved the annual financial report for publication and noted the Meriwether water contract signing with a quarterly budget review coming next week.

Reading Conference Draws 500 Attendees At Sul Ross
A two day Reading Conference at Sul Ross State College drew more than 500 teachers and administrators. Dr. Kate Bell of Houston led the Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading with Dr. J T Wright coordinating locally. Guest speakers included Dr. Henry P Smith Dr. Paul Witty and Dr. Ray King who urged a balanced reading program across all twelve grades and described reading as a pleasurable essential educational process.

N S Moore formerly operated the West Side Courts in Alpine and drowned about 12 30 p m Tuesday in Balmothea Lake while setting a trot line Mrs Moore was with her husband in the boat at the time of the accident she was rescued lake manager Tom Blair Deputy Sheriff Sam Davis said the two were evidently setting the trot line when the boat turned over and sank Mr Moore operated the West Side Courts from 1946 to 1958 State Senator Dorsey Hardeman of San Angelo visited Alpine yesterday and was in Valentine Fort Davis and Marfa Tuesday.
