Alpine Country Club hosts a small invitation golf tournament on Aug 13 and 14 limited to 112 entries. Entry fee 15 dollars due by 4 pm Aug 13 includes golf both days, dinner and dance, with 15000 dollars in golf merchandise awarded to flight winners and runners-up and consolation winners and runners-up. Medalist prizes for low scores on Saturday. Adults 21 and older only.
Funeral services for Clinton Fulcher 60 veteran Big Bend ranchman were held Monday at Geeslin Chapel. Burial followed on the Fulcher Ranch near Terlingua Brewster County. He died Saturday in the Veterans Hospital Big Spring. He served in World War II and was a sergeant in the 91st Infantry. Survivors include his wife Evelyn three daughters a son and several siblings.
Ray Van Cleef resigns as Sul Ross State College dean to join the U S State Department as a Vietnamese government educational adviser. Duty runs 11 2 years with assignments to AID. He and his wife and daughter will live in Hawaii with biannual leaves to Vietnam in pursuit of youth programs.
Residential electric connections within Alpine rose from 1 231 in April 1960 to 1 428 in April 1966 a 16 percent increase. The Alpine School Board employed two new teachers Mrs Elinor J Jefferson will teach science at Alpine High School and Mrs Diane P Stillwell will teach remedial reading and speech. They accepted Jacquelyn Richards resignation and approved a milk program and budget plans for students. A budget hearing is set for Friday Aug 19 in the Administrative Building with members listed.
Mrs. LeRoy Stone and Angelita Valenzuela were named by the City Council Tuesday to a liaison committee for Alpine beautification. Mayor W. E. Lockhar said the city expected help from Neighborhood Youth Camps to improve Alpine air field, golf course, driveway up A Mountain and other projects.

The Highland Cafe will close from Aug 19 to Aug 27 for repainting remodeling. Manager Arthur Davis and his wife Janet will run the cafe and motel, replacing Mr. and Mrs. Bill Loven. Interior updates include painting tiling and two new rest rooms. Razing of Alpine Motel likely next week and work on Rodeway Inn set to start about Sept 1.
At Tuesday’s City Council meeting Alpine plans to trade land with Perry Cartwright and Maggie Smith holdings to extend the east west runway 600 feet toward the west. The city will gain land west of Maggie Smith property and a lane, with fencing repairs estimated at 3009 dollars. Mayor Lockhart opposes bonds for a 100000 airport project despite a 50000 federal grant. O'Donnell abstained. Airport committee members favor extension to remove hazards and aid pilots, with Brewster County support anticipated for lights at no city cost.
