Professor W N McAnulty of Sul Ross College and field assistant Dennis Taylor discovered fossilized remains of a primitive rhinoceros in volcanic tuff beds in the Southern Davis Mountains while doing geologic work for the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology. The fossils are Oligocene, about fifteen to thirty million years old, marking the first vertebrate remains identified in the region.
