Ten young men from the Big Bend and Davis Mountains area are sent to El Paso on August 9 for pre induction examinations as part of a regional range management effort hosted by Sul Ross.

Notables include Hallie Ranch News readers in Larchmont New York and Hallie Brackett in Alpine with Virginia Madison journeying via Packard car to meet friends. Centex Paving Co of San Antonio will start seal coating several city streets this weekend after winning the low bid of 46415. Other bids ranged from 50239 to 55270. Work must start on or before August 5 and finish within a month, with post office and Avalanche office streets rebuilt, no new streets paved.
Mr and Mrs Bill Loven announce the sale of the Texas Cafe to W Y Benge of Marfa The cafe will be managed by George Davis formerly of Sterling City Davis who started in the restaurant business in 1941 says there will be no change in personnel He and his wife have two sons George A in the Navy at San Diego and Koral 14 who will enter Alpine High School in September Davis invites everyone for free coffee and doughnuts today.
Norilla's Gift Shop, long run by Mrs Don Littleton, has been sold to Mrs Rex Ivey Jr of Alpine. The sale was effective August 1 and the shop will operate as Kitty's Gifts alongside The Gift Center under Mrs Ivey. Mrs Otto Hilbrich remains in her role at the shop.
The Marfa Tennis Boosters Association sponsors a boys and girls 15 and under tournament in Marfa August 3 4 and 5. Singles and doubles play start at 9 a.m. at Marfa High School courts with fees 150 for singles and 125 for doubles per player. Lodging may be arranged in private homes.
About 100 conferees are expected to tour Big Bend National Park today as the 13th Annual Sul Ross Reading Conference draws 500 attendees, the largest in history. New officers were elected for the coming year and the three-day workshop featured lectures by Dr. Robert Carlsen and others with TAIR sponsorship.
Luther Yarbro of Brewster County died at his Ruidosa home on Wednesday morning July 26 at age 90. Born October 11 1870 in Hill County Texas he moved to Pecos County in 1890 and Brewster County in 1900 ranching near Marathon. He ran the Yarbro Hotel in Marathon during World War I and is survived by his brother Will Yarbro of Marathon an adopted daughter Gladys Slaughter of Fort Wayne Indiana and his wife Sallie Yarbro of Sweetwater.
Four Tennessee men face armed robbery charges after a Fort Stockton taxi driver was robbed of 65 dollars. Sheriff Jim Skinner Deputy R A Weber and Texas Ranger Arthur Hill arrested the suspects about 15 miles northeast of Alpine on U S Highway 67 following a roadblock set after a Pecos County Sheriff’s Department alert. The victim E H Valen tine identified two m en who asked for a ride to the Little League field in Fort Stockton as the robbers.
Alpine High School will hold a football meeting for all players and interested students at 2 p.m. Sunday August 13 in the High School Gym. Regular workouts begin Monday August 14 with sessions 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Two scrimmages are planned at Pecos on Tuesday August 22 and against Rankin in Alpine on Friday August 25.
About 1500 persons attend the forty-first Paisano Baptist Encampment between Alpine and Marfa with average daily turnout. The session continues through Sunday August 6 amid cool weather from recent rain. Preachers include Dr. T A Patterson Dallas executive secretary of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and Dr James H Londes Wichita Falls. Bible teacher is Dr W R White Baylor University.
Rainfall last Friday to Sunday in Alpine totaled .97 inches boosting July to 3.51 inches and the year to 11.92 inches. Local gauges showed .74 on Friday .12 on Saturday and .11 on Sunday. Persistent heavy rains have been reported in many areas as Paisano Baptist Encampment opening visitors faced a downpour with an estimated 3 inches in under an hour 11 miles west of Alpine.
Bake Turner of Alpine is named Texas Tech's Most Exciting Player in the 1961 football pressbook. The former Alpine High star is praised as one of the Southwest Conference's top all around backs with strong rushing receiving and defensive stats and a noted track and basketball athlete.
Alpine Cowboys will face Carlsbad tonight in a single game then a doubleheader Friday. They also host Artesia Sunday in a twin bill and meet again Monday. Alpine is idle Tuesday before a road game at Carlsbad on Wednesday August 9.
Ranchers and range managers are invited to the Trans-Pecos Sectional Meeting of the American Society of Range Management at Sul Ross State College on Friday. Morning talks by Sul Ross and Abilene Christian College students lead to a 1:30 p.m. panel on stocking rates for Trans-Pecos ranges with Wilhite, Kay, Kahl, White, Holland, Allen, and churchill as speakers and Pate as moderator. A noon barbecue at Kokerne Lodge and welcomes from Sul Ross and ACC officials accompany the program.
During July, Brewster County registered twenty three motor vehicles including entries for J. E. Gray Jr. Mercury sedan in Alpine and C. G. Childs Chevrolet sedan in Fort Stockton. Other holdings include Ford Falcons and Plymouth sedans across Alpine and Marathon with several pickups and ranch fleet vehicles listed in multiple towns. Corporate entries appear for Southwestern Minerals Corp. in Corpus Christi and Sykes Bros., Inc. with multiple Chevrolet and GMC models.
