Officials reported broad local support for the clean up campaign in Alpine, with most citizens helping improve the town’s look. A few uncooperative individuals were named, while League workers praise the overall effort and prepare final district inspections before the drive ends tomorrow night.
Trustees of Alpine Independent School District chose J. H. Head as superintendent for next year. Head, from Cuero, brings extensive experience and has served as superintendent in Fort Stockton. Mrs. Head, an educator, will teach locally and Head will continue college duties at Sul Ross. The Cuero term continues into another year before he declined further reelection.
Pete Crawford, Alpine outfitter, plans a resort on the historic Brown ranch fifteen miles south of Alpine. Old buildings will be converted into living rooms and lounges with thirty guest rooms added. Elevation 5100 feet, at Cathedral mountain foot, praised for ideal climate and setting, with quick fill anticipated.
Alpine High School will hold graduation exercises May 20 in the auditorium for fifteen seniors. Mayor Thom asson of El Paso is invited to deliver the commencement address. Baccalaureate services are set for May 15 with RF Davis to preach. Graduates listed include Roy H. May Ray Roberts Crystal Holland Laveille Miles Grace Carter Bessiel Chute Leth Mary McCutcheon Johnnie Ruth Allen Jane Garrett Velma Johnson Margaret Ariendt Thomas Scovington Harry Watson Lomise Scott.
The Ferguson residence receives hardwood floors and complete repainting while the J W Gentry home on Colles I undergoes a thorough remodel including stuccoing and a new roof. The Newell residence on West lv enue rented by H W Ferguson, with M L Quinn family arriving from McCamey for an indefinite stay, plus other repairs and pending real estate deals across the city. Mrs Clara A Pollon of Houston visits summer with her nephew and niece, Mr and Mrs S Carnes.
Mr and Mrs Head are capable instructors and active participants in all social and civic activities in Alpine. Their involvement makes them doubly welcome in the community and underscores their leadership presence in local events and gatherings.
Alpine Red Cross Chapter and city churches unite for a statewide flood relief drive. E C Moseley offers Mojave Theatre free of charge with Dallas Film Board donating a program. All proceeds from Sunday’s admission go to flood relief, with a 50 cent minimum and no cap on donations. City officials and Alpine pastors back the effort to prevent future drives.
Weyerts announces International Boys Week details with a May 2 parade for boys aged 6 to 14 in the city. The tentative plan includes Boy Day in School on May 3 with visits by men, a High School program, and a Thursday traffic and city office leadership day.
Alpine Texas mayor proclaims May 1 as Flood Relief Day urging citizens to attend benefit shows at Mojave Theatre Sunday evening. Proceeds aid flood sufferers in the Mippi valley, issued April 27 with official seal.
The Highland Poultry Association held a recent meeting led by Miller with Mrs Jim Nail of Alpine and G. Leath sharing talks on baby chicks and poultry management. A round table discussion engaged nearly all present as members report shipping several thousand chicks this spring and expect broader poultry shipments this year.
Reverend Davis of the Methodist church will conduct a single Sunday night service in Alpine at the Methodist church and attendees may then proceed to the Mojave show. Moseley will begin the benefit film at 7:80 p m, running late to maximize patronage for flood relief. A Dallas flood relief appeal asks Texas motion picture houses to join, offering gratis pictures and billing to support Red Cross workers and churches.
G A Trost of Trost & Trost architects El Paso met last week to finalize details for enlarging the Holland hotel. Clay Holland owner said work would begin soon with 30 to 40 additional rooms and an overhaul of the ground floor.
Willie Carruthers, who died by suicide while officers attempted to arrest him last Thursday, was buried Sunday afternoon in the Alpine cemetery. His father, residing in Haskell, Texas, could not attend and requested burial here.
Mrs. J. C. Bird owner of the third ranch south of Alpine sold to Jask oon Harmon this week forty fine Hereford yearling bulls. The bulls were delivered Monday.
A party of 22 Alpine residents including teachers from Sul Ross and local high schools toured Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico last weekend. The 200 mile trip from Alpine via Fort Davis and Limpia Canyon proceeded without mishap as they left Saturday and returned Monday.
The Sul Ross College president urged rapid cottage housing for summer students, citing 260 enrolled last summer and an emergency to shelter more this year. He noted 16 groups have new cottage applications, with teachers from Cuero, El Paso, and Dai- ine seeking housing, and pressed for supervised, efficient, and pleasant student living to maintain a proper social environment.
Alpine prepares for a large July Fourth to Fifth celebration with a district motorcade proposed to bring hundreds of West Texans. West Texas Chamber of Commerce sponsorship and local officials will coordinate accommodations tents and cots and host committee duties with J A Jackson as General Chairman and J B Case ner Col Perkins assisting on tents cots and visitor entertainment plans to be announced later.
