Henry T. Fletcher compiles a weekly Trans-Pecos gazette of towns creeks gaps canyons and springs in Brewster and Presidio counties. The notes cover Marathon Marfa Mariscal and nearby features with elevations coordinates historical hints and local lore.
Readers praise the Trans-Pecos Place Names series in Looking Over The Trans-Pecos column. A North Texas reader subscribed for a year to the Avalanche to follow Henry Fletcher of Alpine, the series compiler and regular contributor, starting January first and to continue six to eight weeks.
Committees to arrange Brewster county Centennial exhibits will display in local business show windows for three weeks in late July. Chairwomen named for pioneer living room dining room bedroom library kitchen and more. Program includes luncheon for pioneer men and a tea for pioneer women with Mrs. C. A. Brown as general chairman.
Teachers from across the two county region converge on Sul Ross college for the Trans-Pecos division of the Texas State Teachers Association. Dr Alonzo F Myers of New York University will headline with D M Wiggins H W Morelock and W A Stiles among speakers. Events include a barbecue at Soernot Park and a Delta Gamma luncheon.
The Granada theatre will award a fifty dollar prize next week for Money Night after the weekly ticket draw failed to produce a winner for twenty five dollars. J. F. Shirley was drawn Tuesday night but did not present to claim the prize.
Senator R A Stuart of Fort Worth, board of regents member for state teachers colleges, told chamber members at a banquet that Sul Ross growth will double in three years if housing is provided. He cited climate and scenery as unique attractions attracting people willing to pay for them.
Adelard Gagnon and Louis Grignon, both from Quebec, tell Border Patrol they crawled five hours on ice from a lake bridge near Sault Ste Marie to dodge officers. They crossed into the Southwest after getting lost, were captured near Big Spring, Texas, and await deportation. Grignon says he served a year for a 1924 Canadian bank robbery. he is a World War veteran. The pair recounts dangerous wanderings and a wolf encounter during their travels.
Region 8 regional events begin with a one act play contest in the college auditorium this evening as the Inter scholastic League meeting opens here. An admission of 25 cents is charged. Tomorrow morning events include tennis debate preliminaries typewriting ready writers and declamation at 8 o clock. Art at 8 30 a m and extemporaneous speaking at 9 a m. Track and field start at 1 30 p m at Jackson Field. Participants come from four districts with centers in El Paso Fort Stockton Midland and Van Horn. J C Coleman of Sul Ross college is Region 8 director general.
At the Holland hotel the El Progreso Study resub presented a Texas and Fine Arts program during the chamber of commerce monthly banquet. Mrs. Russell Duncan reviewed progress in Texas music and fine arts while Miss Ethridge and Miss Christopher performed a Spanish dance. Irma Lee Batey discussed Texas music initiatives tied to the Centennial observance and upcoming events in Dallas and other towns.
Alpine becomes headquarters for the National Reemployment Service district covering Brewster Presidio Jeff Davis and Terrell counties. Vernon M Elwell will run the territory with Myrtle Jones as assistant. The Alpine office in the Masonic Building opens full time to aid employers and job seekers. Phone number 238.
Four one act plays are scheduled tonight in the college auditorium as part of the Inter scholastic league meet. Odessa High presents Undercurrer directed by Taylor Rushing, El Paso High performs Last Flight Over directed by Lucia Hutchins, Van Horn High presents Submerged directed by Catherine Smith, and Fort Stockton High stages The Wedding Veil directed by Pauline Jordan. Curtain rises at 8 00 p m with admission 40 cents for delegates and 25 cents for others.
The Texas Intercollegiate Press association held its 1936 meeting at Sul Ross college April 16 18. About seventy delegates from eleven member colleges attended. Key speakers included Wallace Perry editor of the El Paso Herald Post Dr Haldeen Braddy Sul Ross English head Dr J Lawrence Eason Sul Ross Press club sponsor Miss Elizabeth Baines editor of the 1936 Sul Ross yearbook Miss Marbeth Curry president of the association and R J Ratliff Sul Ross charter member. Negotiations for right of way through the west part of the city for U S highway No 0 rerouting are completed. State Highway department will begin the Santa Fe underpass and other improvements soon. Project cost about 175000 including right of way around 15000. Alpine Fort Davis route upgrades to create a 20 mile paving strip on U S 90.
Drilling was in progress at the Dodson-Means Hovey Dome test 18 miles northeast of Alpine this week after a delay in shutting in. A depth of 1495 feet was reported at the location early in the week.
Brewster County teachers gathered in Terlingua for the annual institute with Judge Slight presiding. Keller welcomed attendees and Sue Mann spoke on curricular revision while Mr. Matthews discussed The Problem Child. Elizabeth We Butte addressed curriculum outreach as about twenty four teachers enjoyed a Mexican luncheon and student entertainment followed by a tour of local mining works.
Gay seniors were dismissed Tuesday for San Jacinto Day holiday. Schools observed holiday with dismissal and the bank also closed all day.
Technicians will prepare a relief map of a proposed international park in Big Bend National Park Texas. The map, twenty by forty feet, will be built by four men over six months in a temporary lab museum building in the Chisos mountains near CCC camp, with an assistant geologist and technicians collecting specimens for a permanent park museum.

City and county officers join a statewide safety program in a campaign to cut traffic accidents. Mayor R Moody reports officers have not yet arrested violators. The campaign targets fast driving and running stop signs and will continue with further cooperation urged from drivers in Amarillo.
