Brewster County Seeks E Bond Drive Boost

Brewster county residents are slow to respond to the Seventh War Loan starting last Monday. G W Baines, chairman, is ill in a Dallas hospital and will be out several days. The county quota for E bonds is $100,000, higher than the $65,000 Sixth War Loan, which was oversubscribed by about 60 percent.

State Guard Units Bivouac In Alpine For Quarterly Training

The 3rd Battalion Texas State Guard will bivouac in Alpine tomorrow night for a quarter training program on domestic disturbances. Sessions begin Sunday at 7 AM after breakfast, with reports until 2:30 AM. MP presence and grandstand viewing planned at Season Field.

Sailor Charles V. Galliego Returns Home After Navy Service

Charles V Galliego is back home after three years and five months in the Navy with 36 months actual sea duty in the Pacific. A signalman aboard a destroyer, he was injured during the Leyte engagement on December 7 and spent time in naval hospitals in Astoria and Corpus Christi. He participated in eight major actions including the Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, and Leyte.

At the Alpine FFA chapter monthly meeting on April 10 at the V A building officers were elected for the next year. Alpine Honors Dead Leader Roosevelt Tribute Held at Sul Ross

Alpine citizens observed a day of remembrance for President Franklin D Roosevelt with all businesses closing 1 to 9 p m. Flags flew at half mast as about 800 people gathered at Sul Ross auditorium for a memorial service led by Rev Marvin Williams of the Pastors Alliance. The program included odes prayers and tributes from Dr H W Morelock and J C Epperson with readings by J S Batey and Rev F S Rogers.

Southern Pacific tests new railroad communication method

Southern Pacific and Aieron Manufacturing officials conducted a Monday test of the aieron induction system on the Del Rio line, equipping a train from engine to caboose for direct engineer conductor communication and station position tracking. East railways already use similar systems, and SP plans to install the equipment on all trains on this line.

Former Alpine Resident Mabel Birdsong Hassell Dies

News notes the death of Mrs. Mabel Birdsong Hassell a former Alpine resident who passed away in Sanderson last Saturday. Details are unavailable. Her parents Mr. and Mrs. W B Birdsong now reside in Lufkin and her husband is a Southern Pacific railroad conductor. The body was shipped to Lufkin for burial.

Annual Round Up Of Boy Scouts At Alpine District Depot Square

Alpine district Scouts staged their annual Round Up on Depot Square over Friday night and Saturday morning. Scouts from seven troops and a new Cub Pack joined in campfire songs, stunts, and contests supervised by Lavell and Don Littleton. Twelve events tested tire-by-friction, knot tying, first aid, and more with Patrol scores led by Eagle Patrol Troop 41 and Flying Eagle Troop 40 with 818 points.
