D. L. Cross and J. C. Coleman were chosen to fill the two vacancies on the Alpine Independent school board in a high turnout election last Saturday. A total of 226 votes were cast with Cross at 192, Coleman 123, and Mrs. James H. Logan 116. Cross and Coleman succeed Patterson who resigned and Cross who is finishing an unexpired term.
Featherstone and Yeager announced the sale of their holdings in the Black Gap country in southeastern Brewster county. Yooney and Sansom of Marathons purchased 1100 mutton goats, 45 orsee and the leave. Four hundred fifty cows and calves were shipped to Brownwood for pasture and 500 steers went to northern New Mexico for pasture. Remnants of cattle, land, and horses will be held on Bee Cave ranch until Fall. The firm expects to secure other lands within months to continue ranching operations. They have operated in the Black Gap Country for the past two and a half years.
The U S Weather Bureau station at Sul Ross College reports a low of 31 degrees and a high of 86 degrees for the week ending Wednesday April 11. No precipitation recorded on Tuesday.
Techingua correspondent Peter Koch of the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History is shooting a first full color film of Big Bend National Park. The project aims to show scenery and wildlife to audiences in about 25 states with lectures to accompany the pictures, with completion expected around July.
A small amount of gas and some oil was reported at the Arco Oil company test drilled on the M. Le Hopson ranch in southeastern Brewster county. Drilling was in progress at about 650 feet using a cable tool rig. The test lies on Sec. 167, Brock G, D&W Ry. survey.
Alpine FFA and 4-H boys staged a strong showing at the Paso Livestock Show on April 1, earning multiple awards and prize money totaling 196 dollars. Don Oliver led sheep judging with a perfect score. Paul Weyerts and Joe Lane followed high in overall totals among 62 competitors. Mickie Smith’s pen of three capons won the championship, and H L Kokernot Jr bought the top trio capons for 125 dollars. Other Alpine winners included Ernest Gibbons Jr, Jack Crawford, Joe Lane, and Ernest Teague in various calf and weight classes. The reserve champion calf sold for 100 dollars more to Kokernot, who also headed several other Alpine calves bought for the Paisano Baptist encampment.
Douglas Dorris led with mediumweight catchit calf at 10 percent. Glynn Uranga took second in catchit calf, while G H Harfst placed fourth in heavyweight calf. Paul Weyerts finished sixth in medium weight calf. Ernest Gibbons Jr. won first in pen of three milkfed lambs, with other milkfed placements ranging from second to sixth in various categories. Rudy Valenzuela claimed thirteenth in single fat finewool lamb. Edward Witiner appears in milkmfed singles at fifth and sixth. Buy War Bonds and Stamps.
Newton B. Drury director of the National Park Service M R Tillotson regional director and Dr Ross Maxwell superintendent of Big Bend National Park were guests of the Alpine chamber of commerce at a breakfast yesterday morning Drury was en route to Big Bend for forest fire training and a regional superintendents conference Tillotson and Maxwell came to meet him Directors of the CC Brewster County commissioners court and a few Alpine residents attended the meeting
The W H Kokernot ranch home 35 miles south of Alpine on the Terlingua road and most outbuildings were burned last Thursday morning about 8 o clock. Fire started from a chimney spark and spread in a strong east wind. A few personal effects and valuable papers in a steel filing cabinet were saved. The 1910 frame house was a local landmark and the loss was partially insured.
A late afternoon message announced that President Roosevelt died suddenly. Details were not provided and the report paused at that point.
The Alpine chamber of commerce requests photos of local service members for a display at the chamber office. A PTA meeting is scheduled for next Monday at 3:43 pm in the high school auditorium and a strong turnout is urged.
Alpine civic leaders outline major plans and costs for Big Bend National Park road development. National Park Service and state officials meet to coordinate traffic handling, with $4 million allocated for park roads and potential highway connections. Local leaders urge action, highlight tax losses to Brewster County, and call on Lions clubs and chamber of commerce to back a connecting road to Alpine.
In Fort Davis on April 11, petitions for a 50 percent revaluation of Brewster County property were debated. The court split two two, with Cotter and Ogle voting for the proposal and Clark and Hernandez voting against. The measure aimed to fund school improvements and county projects amid war inflation concerns, while a counter-petition warned such revaluation could jeopardize county finances and authority. About 100 attendees, including landowners, railroad reps, and citizens, attended.
Pvt John S Weyerts of Alpine was declared dead in a telegram to his wife and parents after being missing since January. He served with the 320th Infantry in Gen Patton's army and had been overseas since September. Born October 3 1913 in Alpine he attended Sul Ross College and worked in local businesses before enlisting February last year. Surviving are his widow three children his parents two sisters and a brother Lt F E Weyerts a German prisoner for over a year.
A four room house owned by Joe Cobos in South Alpine was almost totally destroyed by a fire Saturday afternoon caused by a kerosene stove explosion per Fire Chief J C Cooley. Two Negro families living there lost furnishings and personal effects. flames were well advanced before alarms, but part of the structure was saved. The house stood just north of the Green cafe in South Alpine.
