Two Jeff Davis Men Believed Among Force on Jap Captured Peninsula
Fort Davis April 13 A note from the area reports Myril McBride of Fort Davis Alpine is missing after the surrender of Ba taan forces last week. McBride a Fort Davis High School graduate studied at Sul Ross and the University of New Mexico. He served in the Coast Artillery antiaircraft division and had been in the Philippines since 1941. Parents have not heard from him since November. Captain Milton D Hawes the husband of Mrs Hawes is at Fort Mills, but it is believed no other men from the party remain on the islands.

Tragic double shooting ending in murder suicide at Marathon
In Marathon on April 15, the bodies of Mrs Merle Simpson and Lyndell Shackelford were found in the Simpson yard with gunshot wounds. Bud Simpson was discovered six miles west with a rifle wound to the heart. Investigators ruled murder and death by own action. All victims belong to prominent Marathon families.

Skeleton Found in Abandoned Mine Ends Old Prospector Mystery
Near Alpine, a skeleton was found in a drift off a mine tunnel 14 miles east of Alpine. An old Winchester and other items were recovered. Locals recall Engle, a missing prospector thought to be 60s, as the likely owner of the remains, though origin and cause remain uncertain.

War Time To Be Observed Here Starting Monday

Alpine High seniors raise 100 from play dedication
The Alpine high school senior class netted 95.75 from the play Out of the Frying Pan, donating all proceeds to the Brewster County chapter of the American Red Cross after a sponsor added to reach 100 dollars. Director Miss Mary Louise Nelson led the production while the junior class plans a patriotic fund for a future enterprise.

A. L. Connell, son of Mrs. A. C. Connell of Alpine, served about four years on the submarine tender Canopus. The Canopus was ordered scuttled by its captain as American forces withdrew from the Bataan area to Corregidor. The family had not heard from him since last September.

Alpine Shifts To National Boys and Girls Week Dates

School Fund Receives 287 447 From Land Transfers in Texas
At a Possum Kingdom Lake meeting the Texas State Parks board approved transfers totaling about 221 000 acres of improved lands from Bascom Biles to fund Texas school children. Warrants totaling 287 447 61 were issued to the state for the school fund with further transfers of roughly 240 000 acres contemplated as titles are perfected. The action boosts park development funds and moves toward a 700 000 acre park area with 100 000 acres remaining to acquire.
