Alpine residents will register for War Ration Book No 1 during the first week in May after a national sugarness week with no sales. OPA sets May 4 5 6 and 1 as registration days for consumers and April 28 29 for wholesalers retailers bakers confectioners and industrial users. Each person gets a 28 stamp weekly ration book. stamps are torn to cover sugar beyond two pounds per person on hand at registration. Persons with less than two pounds on hand will receive books. those with more will not.

Tips from Marvin Hal urge removing waste and combustibles, blacking out matches, storing oily rags in metal containers, and keeping gasoline and paint outside with caution about electric appliances. Prevent fires daily by clearing dry grass and debris and ensuring proper fuse and wiring safety.
Workmen uncovered an unidentified skeleton last Friday during foundation work for a Catholic church addition in South Alpina. The remains, likely buried about 60 years ago, show middle-aged teeth decay and a smooth jaw. A home-made redwood coffin and home-spun wrapping were found. witnesses recall no local burials, though one elder mentioned an old grave nearby. Death presumed natural. identity remains unknown.
Brewster county board received order numbers for February 16 registrants in the Selective Service draft. The Ava lanche notes most registrants already learned their serial numbers, shown in consecutive order for easy lookup. The Washington lottery began at 10 001 and numbers continue beyond 410, with 10 omitted for clarity.
The Presbytery of El Paso met at the Presbyterian church in Monahans and closed last Tuesday evening. Rev. Fred S. Rogers was elected moderator for the year. F. L. McCollum of Alpine was chosen Elder Commissioner to the Milwaukee general assembly. Rev. Homer C. Akers of Monahans is the other commissioner. The Women's Presbyterial met concurrently with the Presbytery. Alpine attendees included Fred S. Rogers and family, Miss Nellie Litchfield, and Mesdames Corkran, Peters, Kunze, and Elliott.
Little interest marked Alpine votes in city and school contests last week. City election saw 47 ballots with no scratches. L B Stans Felix McGaughy and Clay Holland named mayor and commissioners. School board election Tuesday produced 96 votes with D N Scott and C B Patterson re elected.
Tonight at 8:30 the Alpine High senior class presents Out of the Frying Pan a Broadway farce in the high school auditorium. Proceeds go to the local Red Cross. a page in The Avalanche honors local soldiers and counties’ boys now serving or training for service. The cast features Bodell Hamilton Reese Craw tora and Foster among others with band numbers between acts.
A statewide Navy Relief campaign in Texas launches with Frederik B. Isely of Alpine as Brewster county head. Attorney General Geald Mann, Texas chair, says every county will be organized to raise funds for Navy Marine Corps and Coast Guard dependents. Texans are urged to donate 210000 toward the national 5000000 quota during Navy Appreciation week April 19 to 25 proclaimed by Governor Stevenson. The drive offers Texans a direct contribution to support service families amid wartime needs.
A Scout training course is tentatively scheduled for April 20 at 8 15 p m at the high school in Alpine announced by Frederik B Isely who oversees the program. Rotary Lions clubs Masonic lodge and Alpine churches are preparing lists of men to contact for participation with Dean A J Parkhurst of Sul Ross in charge. The organizers say the courses will aid both adults and boys and will foster leader development in scouting.
Forty three motor vehicle licenses were issued on Tuesday, bringing the total for the month to 1195 and overall plates for 1942 to 1238. Delays in titles have slowed issuance. several more plates are expected next week. Passenger cars total 863, commercial trucks 248, farm vehicles 127.
Alpine Rotary members elect new officers and board members outlining upcoming projects and community work. The organization highlights leadership changes and plans to expand service initiatives locally.
Actual construction has begun on the Kansas City Mexico and Orient railroad segment west of the K C M O line in Mexico. The project aims to cover more than 200 miles, with work continuing to extend the line to the West coast. The Chihuahua chamber of commerce informed Glenn Burgess that the route will provide shippers with a direct path to Kansas City and shorten distances to eastern markets.
Approximately 350 delegates are set for the 15th District PTA convention in El Paso April 14-15 at the Hilton. Mrs L P Bloodworth will preside as the district leader introduces lectures panels and round tables on National Defense and protecting children. Texas Congress VP Mrs E H Becker attends as state rep. activities reports and plans for the San Antonio National Convention May 3-7 will be discussed. Reservations via R Preston E 1367M.
Governor Stevenson Bascom Giles state land commission and Big Bend Park Association leaders attend a Texas Parks board meeting in Breckenridge to finalize plans for seizing over 1400 acres for the first Big Bend National Park along the Rio Grande. Federal officials say land deed is needed before national park development proceeds.
Rainbow Girls hold a special church service Sunday evening at 8 30 at the Christian church. All Rainbow girls are invited and the public is urged to attend.
A sharp late season cold spell swept the Highland area Wednesday bringing freezing temperatures and light snow in the Big Bend region. A north wind and heavy clouds increased discomfort for outdoorsmen while Alpine saw a light shower last Friday night and heavier falls were reported east and south of town. Rangeland is drying and moisture is needed to assure good grass for stock.
James Moore assistant to the Attorney General has been assigned to the State Parks Board in Alpine to assist with condemnation proceedings and land purchases for the Big Bend National Park. A UT Austin graduate and former Lufkin attorney, he has enlisted in the U S Navy and awaits his call as an ensign.
