The Alpine Chamber of Commerce pledged to quickly provide housing for civilian workers, army personnel, and locals displaced by the Sul Ross housing units and AAC training at Sul Ross. CP and L Alpine plant completes major overhaul and new engines
CP and L at Alpine completed an extensive upgrade adding two 720 hp Fourbanks Morse engines and a rebuilt prior unit for a total of 780 kilowatts. The plant operates evenings and night, supports a growing local demand from a nearby flying school, enlarges engine room, remodels switchboard, and adds four staff. Local Red Cross drive adds 280.10 to Brewster fund, county total 4047.68 with 39 percent staying local.

Second Poultry Course To Start Next Tuesday
Another short course in poultry for adults begins Tuesday night April 20 at the Vocational Agricultural building of the high school. Taught by R. Mitchell, the class covers incubation, brooding, feeding, management and disease control in baby chicks as part of the Mural War Production Training program aimed at increasing food production.

Husband of Alpine Girl Is Missing In Action
Lieut. Bruce Watts of the U S Air Forces is reported missing in action in the Atlantic war area. He is married to Mary Jo Richardson of Alpine, daughter of the late Henry Richardson. The couple wed February 6 at Morrison Field, West Palm Beach, Florida, where Watts was stationed. his home was Humboldt, Iowa.

Flames Destroy Presbyterian Church Building in Texas City
The Presbyterian church at North Fifth and Ave C burned early yesterday, destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin. A passerby alerted Rev. Fred Rogers, and flames spread rapidly aided by a south wind. The manse and nearby homes were threatened. nearby fire crews helped fight the blaze for over an hour. The church, built in 1910, had recent renovations including a Hammond organ partly saved. Loss estimate not set. insurance likely covers a small portion. Plans were announced to erect another church building.

Fred G. Walker head of the Sul Ross College chemistry department since 1920 died Wednesday night after years of illness. Born July 10 1881 in Davis Texas he held degrees from North Texas State Texas University and the University of Chicago. Survived by his widow five children and numerous relatives funeral at the Methodist church this afternoon.

Alpine Man Transferred To Army Air Base Instructors School
First Lieut. Paul W. Stack of Alpine has been assigned to the Army Air Forces instrument instructors school at Bryan Texas as an assistant squadron engineering officer. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Witt Stack of Alpine and attended Sul Ross State College before entering the Air Force. He was stationed at Kelly Field for nine years and in 1938 attended an Air Corps Technical school at Chanute Field.

Delbert Bowles son of Nay Bowles of Alpine is promoted to corporal and transferred from Keesler Field Mississippi to Courtland Alabama as a member of the 403rd RAF band. He says he has received a furlough to visit his wife in Princeton New Jersey and his brother Ira who study at Westminster Choir College.
