City offices announce a plan to drill a new well on the hill south of town to secure Alpine’s water supply during dry months. Expenditure is estimated between five and six thousand dollars for pumps and equipment, with a likely depth of 215 feet before reaching water. Existing wells can pump 300 gallons per minute and will serve as an emergency reserve to maintain pressure. Continued on Page 4.
Paramount assembled a comedy cast for Finn and Hat Me to be shown at Kanada theatre next Tuesday April 14 as a venет show to raise funds for the local Boy Scout program. Stars include Leon Errol Mitzi Green Lilyan Tashman and Jackie Sears with Haddock Hooligans and the film’s cross continental plot. Rotary club sponsors say proceeds will support Boy Scout work in the district and call for strong Alpine participation.
Sandifer's Cash grocery opened in the Fuller building after moving from Hord. A. B. Sandifer reported the opening day exceeded expectations with many old and new customers visiting. Five bouquets arrived from El Paso to congratulate the venture.
Reports from Brewster and Jett counties show apples and other fruit trees severely damaged by a cold snap over the weekend. Estimates vary from near zero to 90 percent crop loss with Stayman and Winesap varieties hit hard while growers note ongoing poor yields for three years running.
Jim Roberts, a Brewster county rancher near Marathon, is building a two story residence valued at $10,000 with modern fixtures and conveniences. L. Watt of Alpine is the contractor and expects completion in 60 to 90 days.
Hunter Metcalfe of Marfa, a leading West Texas attorney, has been chosen to deliver the commencement address at the high school auditorium on May 20. About 26 seniors are expected to receive diplomas. valedictorian and salutatorian will be selected next week after final exams. Caps gowns and invitations are ordered as plans progress for the annual junior senior banquet.
A town wide program of cooperation with nearby towns is planned for Monday with A F Nobinson as secretary. Delegations from Fort Jockton Marta Marathon and Fort Davie are expected to discuss mutual interest topics to foster regional projects and support. Easter sunrise services on Col le Hill drew a small local crowd with calls for greater cooperation next year.
A caravan of Chryslers and Plymouths will be shown in Alpine on Wednesday and Thursday. The A. B. Poe Motor Company of El Paso announces the tour, with Swanson in charge. Cars will be on display at the Roark Motor Company building on College Avenue.
Eleven Buck players depart for Fort Stockton to face the high school Panthers in a tough opening game. Oliver pins hopes on pitcher Sammy Cresap as the lead twirler with Clifton Monse and Clarence Hord as back‑ups. All Buck hurlers are right‑handed except Benson Cook who will not travel. The team has trained about a week and needs batting polish for the contest.
Hayes, former owner of a local coffee shop, plans to open a new cafe in the Fuller building next month in Alpine. He will visit soon to arrange for a big opening day expecting about 500 guests and will install more fixtures to ensure a modern coffee shop.
Clinton Bzell of troop 48 announced that A J Slogeris of Marfa will visit Alpine to teach the ancient sport of archery at the laundry building Sunday afternoon. All troop members will attend as Slogeris covers fundamentals and later moves to advanced skills. The district meet in May in Marfa will include an archery contest with prizes for winners.
Carroll Vaughn, Alpine chiropractor, has moved his practice to the Mitchell-Gillet building downtown occupying offices previously used by Dr. W. T. Stokes. He notes new equipment and says the relocation will let him serve patients more conveniently.
The Rain Bow girls of Alpine are to hold a special Sunday night service at the Baptist church with special music. Rev Baren Sparks will deliver the sermon and each girl will have a Knight Templar as an escort. Alpine churches plan a union service by dismissing other services.
Expect about 1000 visitors in Alpine for the Interscholastic meet starting April 16. District director-general J C Coleman notes 200 plus contestants may arrive from teen counties with more expected as youth seek state meet entry in May. Fred Walker seeks extra rooms and Alpine residents respond to housing canvass. hotels and eateries plan extra staff to handle the influx.
Connally elected co captain of the 1931 Lobos squad with Joon as captain. Ivan Newton named guard and fullback, both boosted by weight gains and return from early setbacks. Booker from Mena Arkansas and Newton from Grandview Texas are also noted as key team members.
Very little interest marked the Alpine area election with only 65 votes cast at the courthouse. Clay Holland and T A Heard each received 55 votes for district trustee, Wells McIntyre 51, John Perkins 50, and J A Whitfield 61 for county trustee. Several Alpine men had scattered write ins while officials reported a quiet day with no contests.
Berkeley's cactus protection bill passed the House to curb removal of native Big Bend specimens. The measure targets exploitation by firms that reportedly removed about $10,000 worth of cacti and sent them east for high prices, amid Senate approval weeks earlier.
Davis Mountain Federated clubs plan unveiling a marker on the old Chihuahua Trail at Kokernot Springs. A bronze tablet by L. G. Knipe will be mounted on mauve stone before Kohernot Lodge with community leaders and a Fort D. A. Russell cavalry band attending.
President H W More Jock and A F Robinson toured Alpine to San Antonio visiting 12 towns spreading the advantages of Alpine and Sul Ross State Teachers College. They logged over a thousand miles with speeches banquets and personal contacts. Schools welcomed them and some even invited talks in chapel as talks aim to bring future returns to the college.
Alpine police report four residences robbed Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with thieves entering sleeping rooms and taking cash. Only small sums were taken as burglars forced doors and escaped quickly. No other items disturbed as officers note targets were cash and move on. Dr Harey A Souther of Boston appeared at a recent event wearing a suit woven from altdogs hair.
The housing committee of the Alpine chamber of commerce projects a conservative total of about 192,000 dollars for summer session housing in Alpine for 1981. With an anticipated 1,000 students spending 150,000 and faculty-related costs adding 30,000, plus 200 more cars costing roughly 7,000, visitors and relatives push the total near 192,000.
