Sul Ross Intramural Rodeo Set for April 11 12

The Sul Ross intramural rodeo runs Saturday and Sunday April 11 12 at the college arena starting at 2 p.m. Men compete in tie-down and ribbon roping steer wrestling team roping saddle bronc bareback and bull riding. Women ride steer goat races flag and barrel races and breakaway roping. Stock by Charlie Thompson of Lubbock. Calf dressing for fraternities and a goat sack race for sororities. Admission 1 for adults and college students 50 cents for younger students.

Judging Set for Sul Ross Invitational Livestock Event

Judging set for Saturday at Sul Ross State University includes livestock and range contests. Livestock sponsored by Clip and Brand Club at Santa Fe Railroad stock pens features 3 horse, 3 sheep, 3 hog, and 4 cattle classes. Range contest by Range Management Club and Big Bend Soil Conservation District covers size, range condition, and treatment, with $100 scholarships to top 3 in each contest for eligible Sul Ross students. Donors include Brewster County Charolais Breeders Association Highland Hereford Association Clip and Brand Club Casner Motors First National Bank and Big Bend Soil Conservation District.

Alpine School Board Adds Two Members After Election

Alpine trustees appoint Jack Williams and John W. Pattillo to join the board at the April 14 meeting. Williams, Pattillo led last Saturday’s vote with 600 and 538 shares respectively, replacing retiring president Bob Halpern and secretary Eva Jeanne. New terms run three years as canvassing and swearing in occur at the session.

District 6 AA Track Meet set for Alpine on April 18

Alpine hosts the District 6 AA Track and Field Meet at Sul Ross Grass-Tex Track. Canutillo dominates team points while many regional qualifiers and last year’s champions return. Key events include 440 Relay, 880, high hurdles, 100 dash, 440 dash, and intermediates with contenders from Canutillo Fabens Alpine and Maria.

Alpine Cemetery BBQ set for April 18

The annual Alpine Cemetery barbecue will be held Saturday April 18 at the American Legion Hall. Co chairs Mrs Earl McElroy and George Mills announced the event. Proceeds fund Elm Grove Cemetery upkeep. Serving starts at 1130 a.m.

Alpine Names Dorothy McBride as First Woman Mayor

Dorothy McBride was sworn in as Alpine’s first elected woman mayor, after serving on the City Council and as mayor pro tem. New terms start for council members Homer Hudgins and Dr. Everett Turner, with Norman Beard elected to fill a 1-year unexpired term. The January election drew 867 votes with multiple write-ins as officials noted.

Lions Club member Robison named to city recreation committee

Robison of the Lions Club will represent the City on a new committee to develop a summer 1970 community recreation program. He and High School Coach Boze Ansley asked the City for cooperation, with potential support from the school system and Brewster County. The Lions Club previously sponsored a summer Little League program, but officials say a city wide plan would benefit more children.

Alpine approves rezoning and council actions

Alpine's new City Council approved rezoning Block 68 from R-2 to R-4 with no opposition. The group also authorized trading items for a drill press, purchasing sewer tile, serving as an equalization board, buying a patrol car light, and reviewing garbage rate changes at a special meeting, postponing rules for the Community Room to April 23.

Alpine native Marvin Young posthumously awarded Medal of Honor

Sgt. Marvin Rex Young 21 of Alpine received the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Nixon in White House ceremonies for heroism in Vietnam on August 21 1968 near Vien City. He stayed to provide covering fire as his unit faced a regimental assault and was KIA. He was a 1965 Permian High School graduate.
