A humorous local note recounts calendar confusion over the first day of spring 1958 and 1959. Different calendars and the Texas Almanac give March 20 or March 21, with times varying from 9:06 p.m. to 3:57 p.m. June 21.
Dr. W. E. Lockhart wins mayoralty defeating Hugh White in Alpine Texas. Gene Hillger and Glenn Burgess elected commissioners replacing Dr. Lockhart and H. C. Hernandez. 837 votes cast. largest Alpine City election since 1946. New officials sworn in. water field Sunny Glen eyed. call for cooperation and steady water supply.
Brewster County Judge Felix McGaughy announces re election bid subject to the Democratic Primary July 2 He cites postwar highway gains from Marathon to Big Bend National Park and to the county line, plus a planned finish to the Alpine area toward Lajitas He notes a county water study and a hospital program funded by sales of bonds and county funds He emphasizes past cooperation with the Texas Highway Department and invites citizen discussion of county issues
Sul Ross hosts Baylor Bears at Kobernot Field with a 2 p.m. start for both Friday and today. Lobo batters led by George Martin and Bobby Dickson shine in recent wins while Warren McCarson and Jim Dodson pace the lineup.
Former Sul Ross State College athletic director Moe Hedrick quits after a controversy over the college athletic program costs. Hedrick says dropping football would hurt the college and Alpine and cites conflicting promises from college president Dr. Bryan Wildenthal. Two students face disturbing the peace charges following a downtown demonstration.
Sixty out of town visitors from Spain, California and North Carolina join Texans in Alpine for the 42nd annual Texas Folklore Society meeting. The public may attend Friday at 2 p.m. in the Little Auditorium. Dr. Wilson M. Hudson of the University of Texas presides.
Big Bend National Park reports a vibrant Easter bloom with bluebonnets along the Santa Elena road and white and yellow mustards. Spanish daggers peak along river areas from Easter week, while ocotillo and several cacti near the central park reach full bloom mid April. Phil McGaughy of Fort Worth will visit Alpine for Easter with his father, Felix Gaughy.
The Annual Easter Sunrise service of the Alpine Ministerial Alliance will be held at 6:30 am on Easter Sunday at Kokernot Field under permission of HW L Kokernot. The alliance president Hey St K Heed of Alpine Methodist Church will lead with assistance from other pastors. A youth choir prepared by Mrs O H Theophilus will sing. The vicar of St James Episcopal Church will be the speaker. An offering for the alliance community work will be taken after the service. John Hayslip arrives Friday from Juice Institute Houston to visit his mother Mrs Anna Hayslip with guest John Martin of Anchorage Alaska.
Mrs. A B Anderson and daughter Karen of San Francisco visit her mother Mrs. Ethel Nail in Medford and other relatives in Alpine before leaving for Mr. Anderson in Urteh Guana South America where he works as a civil engineer.
Coach Howard McChesney asserts football and other sports are compulsory in the Lone Star Conference and warns Sul Ross State College would be forced to withdraw if football is dropped. He cites finances, sport participation, and recent athletic-cost reports while noting local scholarships and facilities at Kokernot Field. Miss Sandra Rogers visited Midland parents last weekend.
The Brewster County Memorial Hospital auxiliary will host a Green Tea at Mrs. J. C. Epperson home from 3 to 7 pm Sunday April 13. It is the year's sole fundraiser to buy more hospital equipment and invites Alpine residents and nearby towns to participate.
Mr and Mrs Art Baker and Mrs Peter Baker left their private plane for Mundelein HL on Wednesday March 26 after wintering here. Chris Francois has gone home to St Paul MN after wintering with his son Jim Francois and family. Mrs Lloyd Moss and Patsy Lee of Garden Grove CA returned home after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs G C Lange and relatives. Mr Moss a Texan Co chemical engineer is transferring to Washington State for a new plant. J C Holmes of Clyde visited his aunt Mrs J S Burgens here last week. Mr and Mrs S E Witwer of Ancrewa visited her parents Mr and Mrs G M Bridges here last weekend.
Three candidates seek two seats on the Alpine School Board in the election held Saturday April 5. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce building. Candidates are Jimmy Logan Jim Francois and Ray Morrow. Logan and Francois present platform statements emphasizing service, school growth, and debt retirement. Francois supports continuing school philosophy and facility expansion with active student involvement.
New Alpine brochures are available at the Chamber of Commerce office. Manager Tom Rawling announced they may be picked up there or delivered to C of C members. The brochures printed in three colors by The Avalanche feature a new tourist map of the Big Head Davia Mountains country and eight photographs of Alpine and local attractions.
Hale Aiken Committee of Brewster County begins writing its final county education report at Alpine High School tonight. Session starts at 7 30 p m. Public urged to attend. Four subcommittees have prepared reports on program teacher supply construction and finance. Final county report will be mailed to the state committee in Austin before May 1.
Easter holidays for Sul Ross State College and Alpine Public School students start after classes this afternoon. Classes resume Tuesday morning with mid term examinations ending at Sul Ross at noon today.
Dr. Virginia Link accompanied seven Sul Ross students to the Student Education Association meeting in Corpus Christi lasting Thursday through Sunday. The group of future teachers enjoyed a moonlight Gulf ride and included Jay Ward incoming Jan Austin Pat Weeks Beth Landers Janith West scholarship recipient Frank Dunlap and Elbert Eckels. Mr and Mrs Ray White of Chico California returned home after visiting relatives.
