Albany September 25 Governor Sulzer’s defense won a decisive point as Jacob Schiff a key prosecution witness testified the $2 600 check he gave Sulzer was for campaign use but not restricted to it He said the mark across the back indicated intended for campaign funds and could be used as Sulzer wished The trial is expected to run for several weeks with this new development shaping the proceedings
The Nebraska Bankers Association gathers at University Temple in Lincoln for a two day convention with over two hundred members present at kickoff. Notable attendee K. Warrick of Scottsbluff, cashier of First National Bank of Alliance, helped discuss distribution plans for $45 million to Western states to move crops.
Telegraph operator J. F. McGuffey of Mullen Idaho lost a pass case containing 60 inCurrency and two train passes while at a local Alliance hotel. He rushed back to his room but the case was missing. One pass was Burlington from Billings to Chicago the other a Pennsylvania from Chicago to McGuffey Ohio. He plans to remain in Alliance until the case and funds are recovered. The Bee Hive store in Alliance has ordered over 2000 worth of toys and holiday goods for its Christmas trade, aiming to surpass last season’s sales.
Washington reports that overall crops for the year are below last year’s average with wheat totaling five billion bushels. Corn production drops to three billion bushels, down about 22.4 percent from last year.
The Alliance stock yards hosted the first day of the season’s final sale. Buyers from afar bid heavily despite a low average of about 67.73 per head. A total of 198 head sold, bringing in 11 456.60 with brisk selling in cold weather.
A guard died after being shot during a confrontation with striking miners near Hille. The incident occurred as guards attempted to disperse protesters and restore order, with authorities investigating the motive and circumstances.
Governor Ammons warns to preserve order in the coal strike district and will deploy the militia without delay if rioting begins. In Trinidad, the death of Robert Lee, a camp marshal, fuels tension between strikers and mine guards amid threats of a serious outbreak as five Greek assailants fled.
Arrangements are completed for a refined Monday night program at the Phelan opera house in Alliance. Olive Orton Andersen, Emerson College graduate, will present readings with vocal and instrumental music by home talent. The program includes a violin reading, vocal solo, piano solo, and Mozart quartet. Admission is 2 cents for adults and 15 cents for school children, with proceeds aiding pupils. Mrs. Anderson has strong endorsements from educators and critics. She will also give a free reading at a union meeting of local church societies Sunday at 4 pm.

The Young Men's Bible Club leads Wednesday's piano contest with 1070 votes at Central School and 280 more at M E Church. Current standings show Central School 3670, M E Church 2860, Y M C A 2820 as the drive continues to win the donated plane for the Y M C A.
Karl Schmidt, who had a drink and chew along the Lincoln to Scottsbluff route, was arrested for drunkenness on Wednesday. He spent the night in jail and received a five dollar fine plus court costs. unable to pay, he was remanded to jail.
The Famous in western Nebraska reports a record breaking sale of high grade men’s furnishings at the Dayled Store run by Marcus Frankle. The crowd filled the store last Saturday with a large stock of fabrics and gear helping many buyers find sought items.
L. B. Wilson division commercial superintendent from Omaha and F. A. May district commercial manager from Grand Island of the Nebraska Telephone Company are in the city on telephone business and are conferring with Manager Tom Beeson.
Mr and Mrs W J Cheshire returned the first week from a month long western outing visiting Portland San Francisco Salt Lake City and Denver On returning Mrs Cheshire praised the Gully Herald after calling the office and the paper received a new subscription card from F B Thomas at 1560 North 31st St Lincoln Nebr Mr Thomas and family recently moved from Alliance to Lincoln.
The Eagles postpones their smoker from this evening to next Thursday due to delays in completing the new quarters. Furniture movement will be finished by then and the hall will be in shipshape form for a large member turnout to celebrate properly.
Philadelphia reports the first game of the World Series between New York and Philadelphia scheduled for October 8 in New York City. The series will alternate venues between the two cities.
Mrs E Williams wife of Yard master Williams departs for Pacific Junction Iowa to visit her purposes for a short time.
Marsh Welliver was arrested Wednesday afternoon after noon for drunkenness and indecent language. In police court this morning he initially pleaded not guilty, claimed a fit, then, after consulting an attorney, changed to guilty and was fined one dollar.
A business meeting of the Girls' Four Square Club is scheduled for 7 30 p m Monday evening September 2 at the club room. All members are urged to attend.
