By midnight tonight Harry K. Thaw is expected to be back in Mattewan asylum after escaping Sherbrooke jail on a writ of habeas corpus. A special board of inquiry ruled Thaw an undesirable alien and deportation is anticipated this afternoon.
Alliance horse Dan Brown a 2:16 1 4 pacer owned by W. N. Hill and trained by Dr C Lester will race at Chadron on Sept 10 entering the 2:15 pace and the free for all Lester will drive the pony later this week leaving in his Overland for Chadron. The horse may visit other fairs this month and return to Box Butte for the local fair. Dan Brown previously set a 2:16 1 4 record about two years ago.
Frank Hedges, Jim Hansen and local game wardens report ample ducks among lakes near Ellsworth and prairie chickens around Alliance. They note butterballs, mallards, teal and a strong grouse showing at Roberts place near Fallsworth with Peterson ranch area cited as best near southeast lakes.
W I Hutchinson of Iowa, guest of Ellsworth Ash at Lakeside, notes new opportunities in Alliance Rex Butte County as he plans to settle two or three homestead claims with his three sons. He hopes for affordable water depths and irrigation, relies on The Weekly Herald for accurate land settlement information, and will subscribe for a year to stay informed.
Western Nebraska horse owners fear a hard winter as oats rise to 1.60 per wagon and hay may climb to 10 to 15 dollars per ton. An Alliance Horse and Mule firm member predicts costly feed for many, with conditions worst in the far west. Box Butte county is expected to fare better for feeding.
Bloodhounds pursue laborer Rasmus Peterson after he choked his wife to death and axed their two year old son. Neighbors found the bodies as Peterson’s threat against his wife resurfaced. A large posse of over two hundred armed men surrounds the area while tracks head toward Omaha.
In OmahuA on September 4, Joe Waters, a Black man, was found badly injured near railroad tracks after being caught with a baby’s bank in his possession. He was arrested. The bank is believed to have been taken from the Peterson home at Fremont, and Waters may have been with Peterson.
The monthly water and light report ending August 15 shows revenues over expenditures by 270.01 dollars, a poor showing for Manager C A Dow. It highlights strict economy in operating expenses and notes a 1000 payment on an old debt for plant equipment. Water disbursements reveal a 827.51 overdrawn amount from July 16, 1919, which has been taken up.
A bill drafted by Representative Stephene of New Hampshire seeks the abolition of every wooden passenger coach on U S railroads within five years. Influences push for passage as Omaha reports President Mahler of the Union Pacific expects government action, while Chicago notes Pullman will not build steel coaches until wooden ones wear out.
The library board decided to order 40 dollars worth of books valued for high school pupils and information use while the remainder will be popular titles. J. H. H. Hewett presided as chairman with Mrs. W. W. Johnson secretary and other members present.
Dr William Hale, returning from Mexico, said Huerta will accede to Wilsons orders and not seek the October presidency. In Vera Cruz the Esperanza carried many American refugees fleeing interior violence and atrocities in Mexico as it headed for New York.
The city council discussed a bill for extras covering medicine and attention to an unfortunate family directed by the city. Dr H A Copsey defined the duties of the city physician as advisory to the mayor and council on disease in the city, not actual work, similar to the city attorney. The council agreed the extras bill should be paid.
J. F. Case a Burlington brakeman from Ravenna was shot in the left hip while hunting prairie chickens near Halsey. The 27 year old man was treated at St. Joseph's hospital and is expected to recover. His wife and mother arrived to be with him at his bedside in Alliance.
An Alliance settler paused at Bex Butte and Third yesterday evening to recall prairie days of the 49ers. A Weiry woman rode the lead wagon while the Charles McCoy family moved from South Dakota toward southern Reno, Kansas, and McCoy praised rough country travel and irrigation plans as he seeks a new life in Kansas.
