Certificates Waiting for Ex Soldiers in Box Butte County

A large number of Nebraska veterans in Box Butte County have yet to claim engraved service certificates issued by the state. About three hundred certificates were turned over to E G Laing for delivery, with many already claimed, others awaiting recipients or relatives. Certificates honor the soldiers with Governor McKelvie’s inscription, sealed and ready for mailing or framing, and neighbors are asked to help locate current addresses.

Alliance Plans Charity Organization Formation

At Alliance chamber luncheon the need for a city charity group is underscored. A formal organization will be formed at the next regular meeting at the chamber office over Drennan's drug store. All interested Alliance residents are urged to attend Monday noon November 22 and call the secretary at 74 by 4 30 a m to reserve seats.

Fire Damages Church in Furnace Blast

A Christian church suffered about 1000 dollars in damage Thursday evening when a furnace explosion ignited the building. Janitor left minutes earlier as smoke filled the basement and auditorium. firemen contained the blaze after a difficult search. John Snoddy of the insurance firm arranged repairs with A S Mote and hardware workers from Newberry’s on the furnace, with services planned for Sunday.

Fred Vogel Sentenced to Sixty Days for Second Liquor Offense

In county court Fred Vogel and James Jacobs were convicted of selling intoxicating liquor. Vogel received sixty days in jail as a second offense. Jacobs paid a $100 fine. Witnesses including Albert Siebendler testified about a joyride in a Dodge with two girls and Clifford Davidson.

Nebraska pioneer Jason B. Wade recalls his early life from Michigan to Iowa and Nebraska. He describes frontier hardships near Orleans in 1871, buffalo hunts on the Republican River, scarce supplies, and reliance on wild game and aid from friends. Wade served as a corporal during the 1878 uprising and later settled on a Kinkaid homestead in Garden County while living in Alliance.

Roll Call for Red Cross to Begin Saturday

The local Red Cross chapter covering Box Butte county and south Sheridan county launches its annual membership drive the week of November 26. Campaign manager Mrs. Ernest L. Potari and assistant Mrs. L. L. Smith lead volunteers to canvass residences and businesses, with a final tag day planned for Saturday December 3 to reach noncontributors.
